VIDEO | Grappling Wizard John Danaher Breaks Down Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Conor McGregor

Conor McGregor is doing all types of jiu jitsu on Instagram. Khabib Nurmagomedov is saying he won’t settle for an interim title and meanwhile a huge UFC card is in the works for Russia. Everyone is wondering is Conor McGregor really won’t come back until September and who he will fight whenever he does indeed return. No other name has been paired with his lately in the UFC other than Nurmagomedov’s. Just recently, acclaimed coach and ground game mastermind John Danaher gave his insight into the potential match-up.

Khabib Nurmagomedov

“What’s interesting about those two fights, is you have basically polar opposites. […] With regards to Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov, the feeling one gets if they did fight — it would be a complete shutout in one of two directions. It’s either like a man beating up a child on the ground, or it’s just a flush knockout. The guy unable to cover distance properly and walking into a left hand and just being catastrophically KO’d. You feel like there’s potential for it to go on both directions. That’s a fight I don’t think goes the distance. It’s one way or the other. And Khabib has been hurt coming in, but he dealt with it well.”

“One gets the feeling that whatever amount of control [Chad Mendes and Nate Diaz] were able to impose on [McGregor] would be nothing compared to what Khabib could impose. Moreover, Khabib is a much more dangerous form of control. Khabib has a program of hitting people on the ground which is substantially better than either of the two athletes you just mentioned. The big difference is, when Khabib gets you on the ground, you’re not getting up. […] If there’s one weakness that Khabib has, is he’s not as strong dominating the setups to get to those areas where he can dominate the pace. If he’s going to lose a fight, it’s going to be in that area. And Conor, more than anything else, is a guy who dominates the setups. The kicks are probes; he’s not trying to hurt you with a kick. He’s probing. He hurts you with [his left hand].” — John Danaher on Joe Rogan’s MMA Show.

As John Danaher dives into the minute intricacies of both Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov’s game, it still is just as simple as it gets: Nurmagomedov either slaughters him on the ground like he’s done with everyone, or McGregor deads him with a punch coming in like he too has been able to do to so many opponents. The thing is though, everyone wants to see how it goes down when those two forces are finally locked in a cage together. While we wait for something to happen, we can at least listen to Danaher explain it over and over again.
