Ranked welterweight contenders Michael Chiesa and Neil Magny have reportedly agreed to fight on January 20 on Fight Island. While this is a big fight for the welterweight division in its own right, either of the two men could apparently get the call to step in should Leon Edwards or Khamzat Chimaev fail to make it to the cage for the card’s main event.

UFC President Dana White has explained why the promotion booked a controversial welterweight fight between Leon Edwards and Khamzat Chimaev. Chimaev was one of the breakout stars for the UFC in 2020, rattling off a trio of wins over John Philips, Rhys McKee and Gerald Meerschaert in the span of just a few months. While those wins were impressive, however, he’s yet to beat a ranked opponent at either middleweight or welterweight.

A highly-anticipated welterweight bout between Leon Edwards and Khamzat Chimaev is set to headline a UFC event on December 19 in Las Vegas. As replayed by ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, UFC president Dana White appeared on the Jim Rome show on Friday and made the announcement that the Edwards vs. Chimaev fight is a done deal. The fight will reportedly take place at 170lbs at a UFC Fight Night card on December 19 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. It will be a five-round headliner.

Leon Edwards reportedly turned down multiple opponents before he was removed from the UFC rankings. Edwards hasn’t fought since July of last year when he defeated Rafael dos Anjos by decision. Since then, he was scheduled to fight Tyron Woodley in March. However, the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Edwards was then locked down in England and couldn’t train properly so he turned down multiple fights.

Edwards, however, believes the Sweden-based Russian is getting a bit ahead of himself.

Edwards and Masvidal have been connected to a potential fight ever since their back-stage scuffle at UFC London in March 2019. With Edwards needing a fight against a top-five opponent and with Masvidal coming off of a title fight loss to champion Kamaru Usman, a fight between Edwards and Masvidal seems like it would make a lot of sense right now. But according to Edwards, the UFC tried to book this fight and Masvidal is the one who said no.

Covington defeated Woodley via fifth-round stoppage in a lopsided beating in the main event of Saturday’s UFC Vegas 11 event.
