UFC welterweight contender Leon Edwards took a shot at Jorge Masvidal, saying his “Street Jesus” persona is just a marketing ploy. Edwards and Masvidal have butted heads on social media for several months now, and the rivalry doesn’t look to be ending anytime soon. Both men are ranked in the top-five of the UFC welterweight division and are hoping to land a rematch against UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, who previously defeated both men. So it makes sense that these two be paired up at some point in a potential welterweight title eliminator.

UFC welterweight contender Leon Edwards is still gunning for a matchup against superstar divisional rival Jorge Masvidal. Edwards is currently the No. 3 ranked welterweight in the UFC. He has not fought since July 2019 when he defeated Rafael dos Anjos, but overall he has won eight straight fights and is highly regarded by fans and media. The next fight for Edwards will more than likely be a No. 1 contender fight for an upcoming title shot at 170lbs.

Birmingham’s Leon Edwards has set his crosshairs on fellow welterweight contender Jorge Masvidal, pegging the potential pairing as “the only fight that makes sense” if he’s not given a title shot. Edwards called for a fight with Masvidal on Instagram on Wednesday afternoon.

Gilbert Burns was not impressed with Kamaru Usman’s title defence against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 251, calling it a “boring” decision. He has also responded to Leon Edwards’ hopes of getting the next shot at UFC welterweight title. Burns has been bulldozing his way through the division and was expected to put his skills the test against Usman at UFC 251. However, Burns tested posted for COVID-19 and was forced out of the championship fight that took place on Fight Island.

UFC welterweight contenders Leon Edwards and Gilbert Burns traded shots at each other on social media over who should get the next title shot at 170lbs. In March, Edwards was set to fight Tyron Woodley in the main event of UFC London but the card was scrapped due to the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, the UFC booked Gilbert Burns against Woodley in Las Vegas, and Burns ended up dominating the former champ by unanimous decision to become the No. 1 contender at 170lbs. Burns was then set to fight Kamaru Usman at UFC 251, but tested positive for COVID-19, which allowed Jorge Masvidal to slip in and fight for the belt. Usman ended up beating Masvidal by decision.

Leon Edwards is looking to get a fight with Colby Covington or Gilbert Burns next, this in hopes of earning a title shot. Edwards was supposed to headline UFC London against Tyron Woodley, where many were assuming he won, he would get a title shot. Yet, the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Englishman has yet to get a fight since. He said he was offered the title fight before Burns but couldn’t take it due to lack of training and the COVID-19 restrictions in England.

In the card’s headliner UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman will attempt to defend his title against Jorge Masvidal, who replaced Gilbert Burns just six days’ ahead of the event.

After Usman TKO’d Colby Covington at UFC 245 to defend his welterweight belt for the first time, many thought his next opponent would be Jorge Masvidal. Yet, negotiations stalled leaving Burns to step up and take the fight.

Edwards was originally set to fight Woodley at UFC London before that card was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Burns ended up getting the fight against Woodley two months later and made the most of his opportunity when he won a lopsided unanimous decision over the former UFC welterweight champion.

Tyron Woodley and Leon Edwards are no longer scheduled to fight, but the pair seem to have plenty of lingering animosity towards each other. The pair were scheduled to fight in the main event of UFC London on March 21, but the card fell through due to travel restrictions associated with the coronavirus pandemic. Woodley was later matched up with Gilbert Burns, who he’ll fight tomorrow night.

UFC welterweight Leon Edwards will next fight on Fight Island and his opponent will be a highly-ranked opponent at 170lbs, says UFC president Dana White. Edwards was set to fight Tyron Woodley back in March at UFC London, but the card was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Edwards is now stuck in his native England, which has heavy restrictions on international travel, which means he will not be able to fly to the United States to fight Woodley. Instead, the UFC is now targeting Woodley against Gilbert Burns in the main event of UFC Las Vegas on May 23.

Since Edwards’ planned UFC London fight with Woodley fell through, Woodley has called out several other rivals, but expressed disinterest in a rescheduled fight with Edwards.
