Mateusz Gamrot is ready to prove he’s a legit title contender at lightweight at UFC Vegas 79. Gamrot is set for his second UFC main event as he takes on Rafael Fiziev on Saturday night from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. In his first UFC main event, Gamrot edged out a split decision against Arman Tsarukyan. With the win, he got a chance to fight a top-five opponent in Beneil Dariush, but he lost by a decision.

UFC president Dana White has announced the main and co-main events for the September 23 Fight Night card. The September 23 Fight Night card is expected to take place at the UFC Apex and Dana White told ESPN’s Brett Okamoto that the main event will see Rafael Fiziev take on Mateusz Gamrot at lightweight. The co-main event is a battle of ranked featherweights as Bryce Mitchell will throw down with Dan Ige.

Jalin Turner thought he was going to have to fight an unranked opponent at UFC 285. Turner was supposed to take on Dan Hooker but about a month out, the Kiwi was forced to withdraw from the scrap due to a broken hand. After Hooker was forced out, Turner thought he was going to have to fight someone unranked and was surprised when seventh-ranked Mateusz Gamrot stepped up on short notice.

Mateusz Gamrot is stepping up on less than a month’s notice. According to FanSided’s Amy Kaplan, Gamrot has agreed to step up on short notice to take on Jalin Turner at UFC 285. Turner was originally supposed to face Dan Hooker but the Kiwi was forced out of the bout due to a broken hand. UFC 285 goes down on March 4 in Las Vegas, with Jon Jones vs. Ciryl Gane serving as the main event for the vacant heavyweight title.

Dariush (22-4-1 MMA) will enter the contest sporting a seven-fight winning streak, his latest being a unanimous decision victory over Tony Ferguson at UFC 262. Prior to that, the 33-year-old was coming off a split decision win over Carlos Diego Ferreira, which was preceded by back-to-back KO victories over Drakkar Klose and Scott Holtzman.

It’s a pivotal fight for the lightweight division and according to Dariush, it is a title eliminator. The main event of the card sees the lightweight title up for grabs as Charles Oliveira takes on Islam Makhachev.
