On Friday morning, former UFC welterweight champion and UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes was involved in a grievous car accident, and was quickly rushed to hospital, where things initially looked quite grim.

Since then, however, we’ve been given some cause for optimism surrounding the former champion’s condition.

First, we learned that Hughes was responsive and was “squeezing hands” when prompted. Now, his family has taken to Facebook with another bit of positive news. Apparently, Hughes is in stable condition and has no broken bones or internal injuries. He also close to being taken off his ventilator, though he is still not responding in the way they want.

“Matt is stable and has no broken bones or internal injuries,” Beth Hughes Ulrici said on Facebook (h/t BleacherReport). “He has some minor lacerations and bruising and is currently being weaned from his ventilator. He is not yet awake and not responding as we would like to see but we see the fight in him.”

Shortly after his accident, the UFC released a statement on the situation:

“Our thoughts are with Matt Hughes and his family,” the promotion said on Twitter.

The family of Matt Hughes has asked that fans respect their privacy during this difficult time.
