Matt Hughes weighs-in on formation of Fighter’s Union

Following UFC 200, veteran heavyweight Mark Hunt called for the formation of a fighter’s union after it was revealed that his opponent at UFC 200, Brock Lesnar, failed a pre-fight drug test as well as a fight night drug test.

Shortly after, it was announced that several fighters began working together, and with the help of a legal firm, formed the Professional Fighter’s Association.

During a recent Q&A in Hamburg, Germany, former UFC welterweight champion, and UFC VP of Athlete Development & Government relations Matt Hughes was asked about a fighter’s union.

“I’m not a union fan, bottom line,” he said. “I think unions started as a good thing back in the day, but they’ve turned into a monster. So I just don’t see a need for it. Fighters have a choice to fight for any organization they want. They’ve got a choice of playing baseball, basketball, football, swinging a hammer, being a lawyer, doing anything they want. But they wanted to fight.”

When I started out, it wasn’t for the money,” he said. “I fought to compete. So I just don’t see the need for a union.”

So far the union has yet to really get a solid foothold in the MMA world. Recently however, during the UFC 202 pre-fight press conference, UFC President Dana White was asked about the fighter’s union, to which he responded by stating that he knew nothing about it.
