Max Holloway on Jose Aldo: “I ain’t friends with the guy”

Earlier this week the MMA community was stunned when the UFC stripped Irish superstar Conor McGregor of the UFC featherweight championship, and promoted Jose Aldo from the interim featherweight champion to the undisputed featherweight champion.

The move came after UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier was forced out of his UFC 206 headlining fight with Anthony Johnson due to a torn groin. With Cormier vs. Johnson off the card, the promotion struggled to find a replacement opponent for Johnson, ultimately leading to the decision to strip McGregor of the belt, and promote Jose Aldo so as to make the co-main event scrap between Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis an interim featherweight title fight.

During the UFC 206 media conference call, Max Holloway\weighed-in on Aldo becoming the undisputed champ after being knocked out by McGregor in just 13 seconds at UFC 194.

“I ain’t friends with the guy. I don’t follow him on social media or whatever. I don’t talk to him, I don’t retweet stuff he posts or have conversations with the guy. So who knows what’s going through his mind? Only his coaches and only himself. But we’ll see what happens. We’ll see what happens after Dec. 10 and we’ll find out. We’re going to go out there, you guys are going to get a great fight, and after Dec. 10, we’ll see what’s up with that guy’s mind.”

Holloway of course is riding an incredible 9-fight win streak that has seen him go undefeated since his 2014 loss to Conor McGregor. Likely to be ranked as the #1 contender on the UFC’s official rankings after the update reflects Jose Aldo’s promotion to undisputed champ, fans have been hoping to see Holloway receive a title fight for quite some time now. On December 10th, he will now have the opportunity to win the interim featherweight championship and secure himself a fight with Jose Aldo for the undisputed belt.

Aldo of course bounced back from his 13 second loss to McGregor to defeat Frankie Edgar via unanimous decision at UFC 200 back in July, where he won the interim featherweight title.
