Max Holloway welcomes fight with Frankie Edgar
This past weekend at UFC 212, interim featherweight champion Max Holloway stepped into the Octagon with undisputed featherweight champion Jose Aldo for a highly anticipated showdown in Brazil.
Ultimately, Holloway weathered an early storm from Aldo before ultimately finishing the champ via TKO in the third round to claim the undisputed featherweight title. Immediately the MMA community began to speculate as to who Holloway would defend his title against. The first name mentioned was former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar, who has been on a tear of the UFC’s featherweight division.
Holloway spoke following the fight on a potential showdown with Edgar, saying:
“Me and Frankie [Edgar], that sounds awesome,” Holloway said at the UFC 212 post-fight press conference. “Everybody keeps saying I didn’t fight people. Aldo was saying I didn’t fight people and Frankie is a former champ.
“I’ve got two former champs under my belt. It’d be nice adding another one under my belt. We’ll see what happens.”
“If they want to do it, let’s do it in Hawaii,” Holloway said when proposing a location for a potential fight with Edgar. “I know a place, a stadium, it’s very nice.”
Edgar has since responded to Holloway, stating in an interview with Flo Combat:
“I’ve been fighting the best competition fight after fight only high ranked guys,” Edgar said. “I’m the only one Max hasn’t fought yet. If Max wants to be this dominant champion and clear the division he would have to face me. I’d imagine he would want to test himself against someone like myself and not someone he has already finished.”
“I saw Max says he’d like to add another former champ to his list,” Edgar said. “I wouldn’t mind fighting in Hawaii and conquering the king in his own land.”
