Max Holloway Opens as a Favorite Against Frankie Edgar for UFC 218

Justin Golightly - October 4, 2017

Now that the bout that we said was slated for UFC 218 is official, we can finally start drooling over Frankie Edgar fighting Max Holloway for real. It’s an incredible match-up and a true test for the new featherweight champion. Jose Aldo is the only man in the division who has ever beat Edgar, with Holloway being one of the only guys he hasn’t fought yet. It’s a fight that needs to happen and gets to happen exactly at the perfect time. The early odds released for the title fight in Detroit have Max Holloway edging out Frankie as the favorite. Per @MMAOddsBreaker, Max Holloway will open a -205 betting favorite over Frankie Edgar (+165) in their 145-pound title fight at UFC 218.

Conor McGregor Gives Props to Max Holloway and Would Fight Him at Lightweight

Justin Golightly - October 4, 2017

On Friday last week, Conor McGregor made his first major public appearance since his boxing match with Floyd Mayweather. We didn’t learn much from the man, other than he has options open to pretty much fight anyone he wants to in his UFC return, but we already knew that. Out of the about seven names mentioned, Max Holloway was one of them. The “champ champ” took out time to praise Holloway and didn’t rule out a rematch. However, it’d have to be in the 155-pound division. “I sonned that young boy. I’m not mad at [Max Holloway]. He’s done a great job. He’s climbed up and claimed that featherweight belt. You see some fights, and so do the public, you see him go in there and you watch him win or lose and you watch how they act and how they carry on. He lost to me and he took it on the chin, he kept his mind frame sharp. Same with [Dustin] Poirier, he’s another guy who kept his mind frame sharp and carried on. [Eddie] Alvarez as well, he took it well – you’ve got to take it on the f-king chin.”

In the same division where Conor McGregor and Jose Aldo once held the throne, the product of Waianae is bringing the world on board the “Blessed” train. With defeating Aldo at UFC 212 to become the undisputed UFC featherweight champion, Holloway says he was promised a new contract if he had his hand raised over the Brazilian. Paulie Malignaggi received a clear warning from another UFC champion

Tom Taylor - August 30, 2017

Former boxing champion Paulie Malignaggi is no fan of UFC lightweight champ Conor McGregor. After joining the Irishman’s camp to help him prepare for Floyd Mayweather Jr., he abruptly stormed out, feeling that he’d been unfairly represented by the champ and his team. Since then, Malignaggi has repeatedly berated McGregor in interviews and on social media. He’s also clashed with a significant portion of the MMA community, battling fans, media members, and even other fighters on Twitter. The opposition in his latest skirmish? UFC featherweight king Max Holloway. The exchange began when Malignaggi debated the prevalence of body shots in MMA with reporter Damon Martin.

Justin Golightly - August 10, 2017

Conor McGregor isn’t technically in the UFC anymore, but everyone still wants to fight him. Who can blame them? The red panty night is very real. Any guy who can talk his way into fighting Floyd Mayweather for his professional boxing debut, is a guy who knows how to make money. Only Nate Diaz was able to beat McGregor in the UFC, but Max Holloway lasted longer than anyone else. Since then, Holloway has dethroned Jose Aldo and is the “undisputed” UFC featherweight champion. Of course, he’d love a chance remove those quotation marks with a rematch. Maybe his recent tweet is a wink at that. I’ll be your sparring partner. pic.twitter.com/UhHhTBCrjC

It’s good to be king, it’s even better to leave a kingdom of battles behind you and drive off into the sunset. Max Holloway had to fight through a ridiculous list of fighters as the UFC increased the game difficulty. He never lost a single life in ten fights after falling to Conor McGregor four years ago, then finally climbed all the way to the top to dethrone Jose Aldo. This is when a gamer like Holloway can enjoy the spoils of victory before someone else threatens his featherweight title. Last month the two met in the Octagon, where Holloway picked up a 3rd round TKO win over the champ to claim the undisputed featherweight title. After his win, talks of the UFC going to Hawaii became more serious than ever. While there has been no final word on when Holloway’s first title defense would be, Hawaii State Senator Glenn Waki expressed his desire to bring the UFC to Hawaii.

Ultimately, in the third round, Aldo was dropped by a big right hand from Holloway, and was TKO’d, losing the featherweight title to Max Holloway. Now, following the fight, Aldo’s head coach, Andre Pederneiras answers the question that ran through the minds of many MMA fans during UFC 212: ‘Why didn’t Aldo kick more?’
