Top-ranked welterweight title contender Vicente Luque reacted after submitting Michael Chiesa with a D’Arce choke at UFC 265. Luque was coming into this fight against Chiesa off of a D’Arce choke victory over Tyron Woodley in his last fight, and he went back to his signature move here against Chiesa at UFC 265. After Luque was able to thwart off an early rear-naked choke submission attempt by Chiesa, he then locked him up with the D’Arce choke for the victory. It was the fourth win in a row for “The Silent Assassin,” and his 10th win in his last 11 fights inside the Octagon. With the victory over Chiesa, Luque improved to 14-3 in the UFC with 13 finishes.

UFC president Dana White says that Vicente Luque is “now in the title picture” following his submission win over Michael Chiesa at UFC 265. The No. 6 ranked welterweight in the UFC heading into this matchup, Luque used a D’arce choke to submit Chiesa in the first round of their 170lbs fight on the UFC 265 main card. It was another impressive showing from “The Silent Assassin,” who was coming off of a D’arce choke submission win over Tyron Woodley in his last fight. The Brazilian has now won four straight fights and he has won 10 of his last 11 fights overall. In any way you look at it, Luque is a legitimate contender at 170lbs, and now he’s closing in on a title shot.

Luque and Chiesa are currently ranked fifth and sixth at welterweight and both are dark horses of the division. It’s an intriguing matchup but for the Brazilian, he knows stylistic, it’s a striker vs. grappler matchup. Luque is also expecting the scrap to be an entertaining one for however long it lasts.

This is a big fight in the stacked UFC welterweight division as Chiesa is the No. 5 ranked fighter in the weight class and Luque is at No. 6. With Chiesa coming off of four straight wins at 170lbs over Carlos Condit, Diego Sanchez, Rafael dos Anjos, and Neil Magny, he believes that a fifth consecutive win over a top-ranked contender such as Luque could be enough to earn him a title shot in a stacked division.

Cageside Press reported that Luque and Chiesa will meet at UFC 265, which takes place on August 7. The event is rumored to take place at Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, with UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou vs. Derrick Lewis expected to serve as the main event. Additionally, UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes is set to defend her belt against Julianna Pena at this event. Joshua Fabia, the former manager of MMA veteran Diego Sanchez, claims that the UFC legend threw his fight against Michael Chiesa at UFC 239. Sanchez lost a lopsided unanimous decision to Chiesa that night, but according to his former manager Fabia, the loss was in part because he was forced to throw the fight. Speaking to the “Behind the Scenes with Summer Helene” podcast, Fabia claimed that Sanchez was forced to throw the fight because, according to Fabia, the Nevada State Athletic Commission spoke to Sanchez and got into his head 30 minutes before the fight.
