Former UFC title challenger Michael McDonald makes his Bellator debut this December

Over the last few years, Bellator MMA has signed a procession of high-profile free agents. One of the finest free agents they’ve picked up to date is Michael McDonald, a former UFC bantamweight who once fought Renan Barao for the interim bantamweight crown. McDonald’s Bellator debut is now set, per MMAJunkie.com. He’ll make that debut when Bellator takes over the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle, England on December 15. His opponent has not yet been made official, but should be announced soon.

The UFC’s top rival, Bellator MMA, has been scooping up a ton of talent in the past several months including Benson Henderson, Josh Thomson, Matt Mitrione, Phil Davis, Rory MacDonald, Chael Sonnen, Wanderlei Silva and Ryan Bader, just to name a few.

Former UFC interim bantamweight title challenger Michael “Mayday” McDonald (17-4 MMA) has been granted an official release from his contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship according to ESPN. McDonald cited “dishonest” business practices as his reasoning for requesting to be released by the promotion earlier this month.

At one point in time, UFC bantamweight Michael McDonald was one of the most highly touted bantamweight prospects on the UFC roster. An 8-fight win streak that ‘Mayday’ rode from the regional scene into the top 10 of the UFC’s bantamweight division had the young prospect fighting Renan Barao in 2013 for the interim UFC bantamweight championship. Unfortunately for McDonald, Barao submitted him in the 4th round of the scrap, putting an end to his 3-year unbeaten streak. McDonald bounced back by submitting Brad Pickett before then dropping a submission loss to Urijah Faber in 2013.
