Nick Diaz is officially back and welcoming him into the Octagon once again will be a former opponent in Robbie Lawler. UFC President Dana White made the fight official on Tuesday via Kevin Iole before the UFC shared the news themselves. The September 25 UFC 266 bout will be only the second non-title non-main event UFC fight in history — the first being UFC 263’s welterweight pairing of Leon Edwards vs. Nate Diaz.

Nick Diaz is targeted to make his return to the sport at UFC 266 against Robbie Lawler. Diaz, who has been out of the sport since 2015, has been rumored to fight again for years. It was reported he was set to fight Jorge Masvidal at UFC 235, but Diaz denied that and the fight fizzled out. Now, however, Dana White announced he’s targeting Diaz vs. Lawler 2 as the co-main event of UFC 266 in a very intriguing matchup.

Diaz was a guest at UFC 261 in Jacksonville in April and he made it known at that time that he was in discussions with the UFC about a potential comeback. The last time we saw Diaz fight was in 2015 when he fought to a No Contest against Anderson Silva. It’s now 2021 and Diaz is hoping to get back into the Octagon and fight for the first time in six years. However, while Diaz himself wants to come back, White was initially skeptical about it. In fact, the UFC president previously suggested that it might not be a good idea for his return.

Diaz was a guest at UFC 261 last month in Jacksonville, Florida, and he told UFC president Dana White that he wants to fight again. The last time we saw Diaz step into the Octagon was way back in January 2015 when he fought to a No Contest against Anderson Silva. In the six-plus years since then, there have been whispers of Diaz making a return to the Octagon, but it hasn’t happened up until this point. However, he appears to be serious about making a comeback this time, and he has been getting in some top-notch training.

UFC president Dana White says that he doesn’t see that fire in Nick Diaz and questioned how badly he really wants to fight again. Diaz was a guest at UFC 261 last month and reportedly had a meeting with White about a possible comeback. Diaz hasn’t fought since January 2015 when he fought Anderson Silva to a No Contest but he has been talking about a comeback for a few years now. With his brother Nate Diaz returning to the Octagon next month at UFC 263, the older Diaz brother is also hoping to make his return to the cage this year and he told White just as much.

Nick Diaz will not be making his highly anticipated Octagon return against Khamzat Chimaev according to his manager Kevin Mubenga. Earlier this week, Chris Taylor of BJPENN.com reported that the eldest Diaz brother had been formally offered a fight with Chimaev for later this summer.

Jorge Masvidal says he will fight again and would be open to facing Nick Diaz next time out. At UFC 261, Masvidal suffered a KO loss to Kamaru Usman for the welterweight title. It served as their rematch from last July where Usman won a decision. Although the result was disappointing for “Gamebred” he says he still has the fire to compete in him.
