Demetrious Johnson says TJ Dillashaw should face Marlon Moraes next

By James Lynch - March 18, 2019

Former UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson wasn’t a fan of super fights when he competed for the Las Vegas based promotion and that still holds true as he gears up for his ONE Championship debut.

“Mighty Mouse” spoke with Helen Yee of “Eyes on The Game” on the current UFC bantamweight title picture amid rumblings of a potential rematch between champion TJ Dillashaw and current flyweight kingpin Henry Cejudo.

“In my personal opinion, the best thing to happen [would be] if TJ went off and defended the belt against Marlon Moraes, who’s the number-one contender in my personal opinion, and then Henry Cejudo can go defend his belt,” Johnson explained. “Because a lot of these champ-champ and double champ and all that stuff, it kind of holds the division. When I’m sitting by watching it, I’m ready to see Marlon Moraes get his chance. I think when there’s absolutely nobody for those two to compete against, that’s when you do super fights.”

Demetrious Johnson (27-3-1) was called out by Dillashaw about a potential superfight last year and instead fought number #1 contender Cejudo at UFC 227. After losing his belt in a somewhat controversial decision, Johnson left the UFC for ONE Championship and is set to make his promotional debut at the end of this month against Yuya Wakamatsu.

Cejudo meanwhile defeated Dillashaw — who dropped down to flyweight — knocking out the current bantamweight champion in just 32 seconds. Following the setback, Dillashaw requested a rematch at flyweight but Cejudo seems interested in a rematch for his 135-pound title instead. The man Johnson believes should be fighting for the bantamweight title next, Marlon Morales, has won four-straight fights with three of those victories coming by stoppage.

Johnson meanwhile looks to avoid back-to-back losses for the first time in his career when he steps into the ONE cage on Mar. 31. The Kirkland, Washington native was on a 14-fight unbeaten streak dating back to Oct. 2011 prior to his setback against Cejudo. The 32-year-old will be competing at 135-pounds for the first time since his loss to Dominick Cruz at UFC on Versus 6.

Do you agree with Demetrious Johnson? Would you like to see Marlon Moraes fight TJ Dillashaw next?
