A women’s flyweight bout between Amanda Ribas and Paige VanZant kicked off tonight’s UFC 251 main card from Fight Island. VanZant (8-4 MMA) was returning to action for the first time since January of 2019, where she had picked up a submission victory over Rachael Ostovich. That win had snapped a two-fight losing skid for ‘PVZ’, who previously suffered setbacks to Michelle Waterson and Jessica-Rose Clark respectively.

VanZant has not fought since January 2019, when she submitted Rachael Ostovich at UFC on ESPN+ 1, due to numerous injuries. After 18 months out of the cage, she makes her long-awaited return to the Octagon in July when she meets Amanda Ribas in the main card opening bout at UFC 251. This will be the last fight on VanZant’s UFC contract and she is expected to field offers from other promotions after the bout, so getting a win as a big underdog would be huge for her stock.

She was set to fight Amanda Ribas at UFC Brasilia last month but was forced to pull out of the fight after re-breaking her arm. Ribas ended up fighting Randa Markos and putting a beating on her but afterward called for the UFC to re-book the VanZant bout. Unfortunately, that planned comeback was fight was foiled by yet another arm injury. Speaking on Instagram, VanZant opened up on this new injury and promised that it will not keep her out of action for too long. She says she’ll fight again in May.
