When Eddie Alvarez and Rafael dos Anjos stepped into the Octagon on July 7th, no one could have imagined Alvarez would pick up such an incredibly dominant TKO just minutes into the fight to claim the UFC lightweight championship. With the UFC opting to book dos Anjos to fight Tony Ferguson rather than give him an immediate rematch with Alvarez, the former champ has made some changes behind the scenes.

Former UFC lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos will be locking horns with surging contender Tony Ferguson on November 5 in Mexico City. And while this isn’t the fight “RDA” was initially hoping for, it is one he seems fairly happy with. “I asked for the rematch [with Alvarez], but I didn’t think they’d give it to me, so I needed to fight somebody else. So I thought, who should I fight? Tony’s a guy with eight wins straight, and Khabib is begging for the belt which I don’t think he deserves.” dos Anjos told Ariel Helwani on today’s episode of The MMA Hour.

News surfaced this week from Champions.co that dos Anjos would be returning to the Octagon at the TUF Latin America 3 Finale on November 5th in Mexico City to fight #3 ranked lightweight Tony Ferguson in a pivotal lightweight showdown.

Back in 2004, Rafael dos Anjos made his professional MMA debut in Juiz de Fora, Brazil. dos Anjos lost the fight via split decision to Adriano Abu. Shortly after the fight, Abu decided to step away from MMA to work as a prison guard in order to stay close to home. 10 years after his fight with dos Anjos, there was a prison riot. Abu, who is widely respected by both the prisoners and guards, was off duty at the time, but headed to the prison to help with the situation.

Earlier this year, after Conor McGregor knocked out Jose Aldo in 13 seconds to claim the UFC featherweight championship, McGregor was slated to move up to lightweight to fight lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of UFC 196. Unfortunately, dos Anjos was forced out of the bout with a broken foot, and was ultimately replaced by Nate Diaz, who defeated McGregor in a welterweight matchup. With a rematch between McGregor and Diaz slated for UFC 202 on August 20th, dos Anjos spoke to MMAJunkie to give his thoughts on that bout, and campaign for a fight with McGregor:

While reports have emerged that indicate a boxing match between UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor and boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. is close to being finalized, UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos believes that he has unfinished business with McGregor. The pair were initially slated to fight at UFC 196 for dos Anjos’ lightweight championship, however a broken foot forced RDA out of the bout. Ultimately, the UFC replaced RDA with Nate Diaz, and the rest is history!

UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos and UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor were supposed to meet in a superfight at UFC 196. However, Dos Anjos broke his foot leading up to the fight and Nate Diaz stepped in as a late replacement and now dos Anjos is no longer in the picture to fight “The Notorious.” This hasn’t stopped dos Anjos from getting his jabs in on McGregor when he can.

While Rafael dos Anjos is currently the UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov holds a win over dos Anjos, something ‘The Eagle’ hasn’t been quick to let RDA forget. Nurmagomedov had been sidelined for two years before his return to the Octagon earlier this month at UFC on FOX 19, where he defeated UFC newcomer Darrell Horcher via 2nd round TKO.

Tuesday afternoon UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor left the MMA world confused after he took to Twitter to announce his retirement. While many suspected that the Tweet was a ‘troll job’ by McGregor, sources revealed that McGregor was not joking when he announced his retirement. This was then followed up by a Tweet from McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh, who revealed that McGregor was in fact retiring.

While dos Anjos believes that Alvarez will try to out-wrestle him, he also believes that his elite level Jiu-Jitsu will be the X-factor.
