Robbie Lawler vs. Donald Cerrone being targeted for UFC 205

Recently, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone teased an ‘epic’ fight announcement at welterweight. The statement from Cerrone came on the heels of his spectacular UFC 202 knockout win over Rick Story.

The win over Story, which made it 3 straight finishes for Cerrone at welterweight, cemented his place in the top of the UFC’s stacked 170 pound division.

Since Cerrone teased his ‘epic’ fight announcement, there has been much speculation as to whether or not the UFC would book him to fight Lawler, who is fresh off a 1st round KO loss to Tyron Woodley for the welterweight championship.

Now, according to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, the UFC has listened to fans pleas, and is looking to book Cerrone vs. Lawler for their inaugural event at the Madison Square Garden on November 12th, UFC 205.

Lawler put together 5 straight wins over the course of 2 years, winning the welterweight championship and defending it twice before being finished by Woodley earlier this year.

Cerrone on the other hand made the jump to 170 after a 1st round TKO loss to Rafael dos Anjos in a failed bid for the UFC lightweight championship. Since moving to 170, Cerrone has gone 3-0, finishing Alex Oliveira, Patrick Cote, and more recently Rick Story.

So far there has been no word yet on what other bouts will be placed on the UFC 205 card.

Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
