Cris Cyborg: Fight with Ronda Rousey can’t happen at 135 pounds
Last month, UFC President Dana White announced that former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey would be returning to the Octagon on December 30th
in the main event of UFC 207 to square off with Amanda Nunes for the women’s bantamweight championship. Along with the announcement, White revealed that if Rousey emerges from her UFC 207 return victorious, she will then have her long awaited superfight with Cris Cyborg.
Shortly after that announcement, Rousey revealed in a separate interview that her fight with Nunes will be one of her last before officially retiring from MMA and moving on to filming movies in Hollywood full time.
That didn’t sit too well with Cyborg, who took to Twitter to react to the retirement talks, saying:
“The talk of retirement and rumors of the fight happening are predictable.Time 2 bring n the FW division, ufc can make stars there with promo”
Following Rousey’s announcement of her impending retirement, UFC President Dana White stated that a fight between Rousey and Cyborg would have to take place at catchweight given that Cyborg fights at 145, Rousey fights at 135, and Cyborg is unable to make the bantamweight limit of 135 pounds.
In a new interview, Cyborg gave her thoughts on the potential bout to FloCombat, saying:
“135 is not an option,”
“Belts are for the fans, and I already have two at my house,” Justino said. “I don’t need anymore to feel successful with what I’ve accomplished.”
When asked if she believes she’s the best female fighter in the world, Cyborg stated:
“I will let the fans decide that. I have an exciting fighting style and a lot of fans like how I win by knockout.
“Fans define a fighter’s legacy. When I’m done I hope they respect my battles inside the cage and realize I always tried to help create opportunities for growth in WMMA on a whole.”
So far there has been no word as to when Cyborg will be returning to the Octagon following her 2nd round win over Lina Lansberg back in September. The win made it two straight for Cyborg, who made her triumphant UFC debut back in May when she defeated Leslie Smith via 1st round TKO at UFC 198.
