In a few short weeks, in the main event of the UFC’s latest Fox broadcast, The Ultimate Fighter 18 winner Julianna Pena will battle fellow bantamweight contender Valentina Shevchenko. The winner of this fight is more than likely to get the next shot at reigning bantamweight champion, Amanda Nunes. While Pena is obviously eager for her long-awaited crack at UFC gold, she explained on a recent episode of Brian Stann’s radio show Toe-2-Toe on SiriusXM Rush that she wishes the bantamweight crown was still owned by former champion Ronda Rousey. Apparently, Pena has wanted to fight Rousey since her days on The Ultimate Fighter 18– a season Rousey coached. The top-ranked bantamweight also feels that Rousey has been avoiding her.

Unfortunately for her, this long-awaited comeback did not go as she planned, as she was mauled by reigning women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes in just 48 seconds. In the wake of Rousey’s emphatic knockout loss, many members of the MMA community have wished her well and speculated on what the future holds for her. Now, boxing great Floyd Mayweather has done the same, and despite the animosity between him and Rousey in the past, he was actually quite kind.

On Monday, Ronda Rousey posted on social media for the first time since losing to Amanda Nunes at UFC 207. Rousey’s social media post was a quote from J K Rowling that reflected her mindset saying, “And so rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.”

Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey made her first social media post since losing to the current chamion Amanda Nunes at UFC 207 on Monday. Rousey came back as the end of 2016, taking a year off from fighting after losing for the first time in her professional mixed martial arts career in 2015 against Holly Holm. The time off seemingly did not help Rousey in her comeback as she was devastated by Nunes in the first round of their title fight on December 30.

UFC 207 was big business for the UFC. Early estimates show that the stacked card did approximately 1.1 million pay-per-view buys. The card, which occurred on December 30 of 2016, was headlined by a women’s bantamweight title fight between returning former champion Ronda Rousey, and reigning divisional queen Amanda Nunes. Nunes won this fight in the biggest way possible, stopping her foe with punches in a mere 48 seconds.

Since Ronda Rousey’s UFC 207 loss to Amanda Nunes last week to close out 2016, the MMA community has been torn between supporting Ronda Rousey at a low point, and criticizing the former champ for being ill prepared for her scrap with Amanda Nunes. While there has been a tremendous outpouring of support for Rousey in the time since the fight, which included Floyd Mayweather Sr. and his brother Jeff Mayweather offering to train Rousey, her coach, Edmond Tarverdyan has been the subject of much criticism.

In one of the most surprising MMA stories in recent memories, news has now surfaced that during her training camp leading up to UFC 207, former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey actually had training partner and fellow women’s bantamweight Raquel Pennington sign a non-disclosure agreement. Essentially, what this means is that while Rousey and Pennington trained together for Rousey’s highly anticipated UFC 207 return to the Octagon against Amanda Nunes, Pennington can’t legally speak about the nature of the training sessions, or anything that occurred in them.

When UFC President Dana White announced that Ronda Rousey would be returning to the Octagon to fight Amanda Nunes on December 30th in the main event of UFC 207, he also pointed out that if Rousey were to emerge from her UFC 207 scrap with Nunes victorious, she would then likely move on to fight Cris Cyborg in a highly anticipated superfight. While the superfight was always just out of reach from fight fans, during Ronda Rousey‘s hiatus from the time of her loss to Holly Holm, to her fight with Amanda Nunes, Cyborg fought twice in the UFC, going 2-0 at catchweight fights of 140 pounds. While it appeared as though the stars were aligning for the potential superfight to become a reality, Rousey’s one-sided loss to Amanda Nunes at UFC 207 this past weekend ended talks of a potential fight with Cris Cyborg.

While the expectations were that Rousey would return to the Octagon with improved striking, when she stepped into the Octagon with Amanda Nunes at UFC 207, it didn’t take long for Rousey to show fight fans that her striking game had not developed enough to compete with an elite level striker like Nunes. Just 48 seconds into the fight, referee Herb Dean was forced to stop the bout due to Rousey being out on her feet.

Ronda Rousey coach Edmond Tarverdyan continues to find himself in the firing line, taking the brunt of the blame for his fighter’s failed comeback. This comeback, which occurred in the main event of UFC 207, saw Rousey return from an absence of more than a year to be knocked out in just 48 seconds by reigning bantamweight queen Amanda Nunes. The reason that Tarverdyan is receiving so much flack for Rousey’s UFC 207 performance is that Rousey showed almost nothing in the way of improvement between her shocking 2015 knockout loss to Holly Holm and her recent loss to Nunes. While this is of course partially her fault, it is the job of a coach to ensure their fighters are always evolving, and Tarverdyan has clearly failed abysmally in this department when it comes to Rousey. This fact, when paired with the recent records of Tarverdyan’s other high-profile fighters, such as UFC heavyweight Travis Browne, has resulted in his being roasted by many members of the MMA community.

While leading up to UFC 207 Ronda Rousey was touted as the toughest test of Amanda Nunes’ MMA career, when the pair stepped into the Octagon Nunes made quick work of Rousey, dispatching of the former champ in just 48 seconds after landing a big punch just moments into the fight that stunned Ronda Rousey. With the win, Nunes advanced to 3-0 over the course of 2016, secured her first title defense, and extended her win streak to 5, with her only UFC loss coming at the hands of Cat Zingano in 2014.
