Report: Ronda Rousey is already almost on weight for her UFC 207 bantamweight title fight

By Tom Taylor - December 6, 2016

It’s now been over a year since former women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey was knocked out by Holly Holm, and we haven’t seen her in action since. In a few short weeks, however, that will change. Rousey is expected to make her long awaited comeback in the main event of UFC 207 on December 30, when she takes on reigning champion Amanda Nunes.

In advance of this fight, there has been widespread speculation surrounding Rousey’s headspace and physical condition. A year on the shelf, after all, can have major effects on a fighter both mentally and physically. Many fans and pundits have wondered whether she’s motivated, and whether she’ll be in adequate shape come fight night.

Today, we were given reason to believe that the former champ is at the very least in good shape. According to a Tweet from Ariel Helwani, she’s already gotten her weight down to 140 pounds, which means she’ll only have to shed 5 pounds to make the bantamweight division’s 135-pound cap. More impressive still is that Rousey is apparently “well-fed,” meaning she hasn’t deprived herself of food to get her weight down so low.

Whether Rousey is in shape or not, she’ll face a stark test in the new champ Nunes. When we last saw the dangerous Brazilian in action, she swiped the title with a first round mauling of Miesha Tate. Prior to that title win, she scored consecutive victories over Valentina Shevchenko, Sara McMann, and Shayna Baszler. With 10 first round wins to her name, Nunes is one of the few fighters on earth who can match Rousey’s proficiency for quick wins.

Prior to her loss to Holm, Rousey had never tasted defeat as a mixed martial artist. Since being crowned the inaugural women’s bantamweight champion, she has defeated Liz Carmouche, Miesha Tate, Sara McMann, Alexis Davis, Cat Zingano and Bethe Correia. Of those women, only Tate was able to escape the first round.
