Rory MacDonald expresses his “disappointment” with Bellator MMA
Rory MacDonald has expressed some disappointment following his move from the UFC to Bellator MMA.
The former UFC welterweight title challenger, MacDonald, signed with Bellator in August of 2016 and made his promotional debut this past May in London.
“The Red King” would earn a second-round submission victory over feared knockout artist Paul Daley in his debut at Bellator 179, which positioned MacDonald as the next man to challenge current Bellator welterweight champion Douglas Lima.
Unfortunately for MacDonald, and fight fans in general, Rory’s title fight with Lima will not take place until January 20, 2018.
MacDonald discussed his displeasure with his inactivity at Bellator in a recent interview with MMAJunkie:
“I’ve expressed my disappointment with Bellator,” MacDonald told MMAjunkie. “I had some conversations with (Bellator President) Scott Coker expressing that. I’m not the type of fighter that needs to be sidelined and fight once a year. I need to be kept busy. I think he knows now. I think he wants to improve on that in 2018 and keep me more busy. I’m waiting. We’ll see. I hope that I’ll get at least three fights in during 2018.”
MacDonald continued:
“It’s been a slow process with Bellator,” MacDonald said. “I think their organization is – they’re a little bit scattered. It’s a small staff, and things like that. But they’re doing the best they can. I’m sure 2018 we’ll get that ball rolling. Once I’m the champion, I think that creates more excitement going into Canada, going in as the champion. It’s more meaningful to promote a fight up there having a Canadian champion. We’ll see what happens.”
As for his upcoming scrap with Lima, the Canadian standout does not believe that the January 20 title fight will go the distance of five rounds. MacDonald visualizes himself finishing Lima within three-rounds.
Do you think Bellator MMA will be able to keep Rory MacDonald happy or will “The Red King” eventually return to the UFC? Sound off PENN Nation!
