Rory MacDonald up for “gangster weight” fight with Chael Sonnen
Less than 24 hours ago, former UFC middleweight, and light heavyweight, title challenger Chael Sonnen announced that he had ended his retirement, and signed an exclusive multi-fight contract with Bellator MMA.
While no date was given for Sonnen’s first fight, there was some speculation regarding whether Sonnen would fight at middleweight, or light heavyweight given the fact that he has fought at both weight-classes in the past.
It was quickly revealed that Sonnen would be fighting at multiple weight-classes, and would like to make his Bellator MMA debut against former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz, who is coming off a submission loss to Bellator light heavyweight champion Liam McGeery nearly a year ago.
After the announcement of Sonnen’s signing, newly signed Bellator MMA welterweight Rory MacDonald took to Twitter to hint at a fight with Sonnen.
@arielhelwani @ChaelSonnen gangster weight sounds good to me

MacDonald recently lost a unanimous decision to top ranked UFC welterweight Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson in the main event of UFC Ottawa. Following the fight, MacDonald spent some time as a free agent before deciding to sign with Bellator MMA.
Similarly to Sonnen, there has been no word yet as to when MacDonald will make his Bellator MMA debut, however a potential fight between Chael Sonnen and Rory MacDonald will likely result in fight fans calling for the fight sooner rather than later.
MacDonald, who has fought at welterweight throughout the majority of his professional MMA career, would enter the potential bout on a 2-fight losing streak that saw him drop back to back losses in spectacular fights against Robbie Lawler, and Stephen Thompson.
