Santiago Ponzinibbio thinks fight with “Wonderboy” would go down in UFC history
Argentina’s Santiago Ponzinibbio is riding one of the best win-streaks in the stacked UFC welterweight division, having bested his last six foes – men like Nordine Taleb, Gunnar Nelson, and most recently, “Platinum” Mike Perry.
With all of this momentum behind him, Ponzinibbio is hoping to be rewarded with a fight with two-time UFC welterweight title challenger Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson.
Ponzinibbio made this interesting callout of Wonderboy in a recent interview with MMABrasil.com.br.
“I’d like to fight Thompson. I think he’s a great striker, and I want to be the best striker in the division, so I’ve been showing [my skills]. I’ve got six consecutive wins, three by first-round knockout. The last one was a decision, but I’ve been showing good fights, with good exchanges of blows, trying to work [my fights] standing. So I believe I have the resources to beat [Wonderboy], and we would put on a very good fight… a fight that would stay in UFC history.”
Stephen Thompson has not fought since November, when he defeated fellow contender Jorge Masvidal by unanimous decision. With this win, Thompson rebounded from two failed title bids opposite reigning UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, the first being a majority draw, the second being a majority decision loss. Thompson’s fights with Woodley were preceded by a seven-fight streak, highlighted by impressive wins over reigning UFC middleweight champ Robert Whittaker, Jake Ellenberger, former UFC welterweight champ Johny Hendricks, and reigning Bellator welterweight champ Rory MacDonald.
