Perennial #1 ranked flyweight contender, two-time flyweight title challenger, and former WEC bantamweight title challenger, Joseph Benavidez will make his comeback against Sergio Pettis at UFC 225 in Chicago, Illinois, June 9, reports the Chicago Tribune.

It’s UFC 217 all over again with tonight’s UFC 218. The card is stacked from top to bottom and all the fighters are going to be fighting for the spotlight. Not to be left in the dark underneath the ridiculous main and co-main events, Henry Cejudo will fight Sergio Pettis in what is sure to be a lightning blitz of a battle. Flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson has said himself the the scrap between (#2) Cejudo and (#4) Pettis is for the number one contender spot. However, what if the superfight with TJ Dillashaw goes down? No problem, says Pettis. He’s actually willing to step aside and wait until Johnson finishes his business. “I’m 24 years old, I’m getting better and better, and if they want me to fight again before a title, I’m good with that. I’m building my resume, getting some money on top of it and getting some experience. TJ [Dillashaw] vs. [Demetrious Johnson], that’s an interesting fight, even for me. I’m a fan of the sport. It’s entertainment and it makes sense. It’s part of the business. I have no hatred towards that. I understand it. If they want me to build my resume and get to that DJ shot, I will. If I have a great performance against Henry Cejudo, maybe I can get there.”

After a dry spot in the land of MMA, suddenly there was a mirage of beautiful fight announcements. They didn’t just trickle, but were an all-out tidal wave. Four massive fights were slated for UFC 218, two were confirmed and there are two more to go. If we take Henry Cejudo’s word for it though, then his fight with Sergio Pettis on the card is a done deal. The former flyweight title challenger posted this message on social media, saying that the fight on December 2nd is on. Last night, the UFC touched down in sun-soaked Mexico City, Mexico, with an exciting night of fights. In the main event, we were treated to a clash of young flyweight contenders, as Duke Roufus trained Sergio Pettis took on Mexico’s own Brandon Moreno. Though both fighters are very young – both 23 years old – this looked like it could be a flyweight number one contender fight, with the winner earning a shot at incredibly dominant champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson. In the end, it was Pettis that earned the win, braving some early adversity to recapture the momentum, and ultimately a unanimous decision win. Surprisingly, however, his immediate focus is not on a flyweight title shot.

Last night, the UFC touched down in Mexico City, Mexico. This time, the card was headlined by a compelling clash of flyweight contenders, as Sergio Pettis took on Mexico’s own Brandon Moreno. Though Moreno started strong, Pettis bounced back in a big way, regaining control of the fight in the second to batter Moreno on the feet, ultimately capturing a unanimous decision win as a result. A key flyweight scrap between Sergio Pettis and Brandon Moreno served as the headlining bout of tonight’s UFC Fight Night 114 event in Mexico City. Round one begins and Moreno misses with an attempted low kick to start. He fires off another that lands. Moreno catches a Pettis low kick and uses that to score an early takedown. Moreno working from full guard here. Pettis traps an arm. Moreno pulls it free. Pettis scrambles but gives up his back. Moreno takes the back and locks in a body triangle. Brandon is looking for a rear-naked choke now. He switches to some punches and then resorts back to working for the submission. Pettis is able to avoid the choke. Moreno switches to punches. Pettis attempts to scramble but Brandon stays on his back. Brandon is working some strikes from the back. Ten seconds remain. The horn sounds to end round one.

On August 5, the UFC will touch down in Mexico City, Mexico for the fourth time. It will do so with UFC Fight Night 114, a card that, while still some distance away, is already coming together. On Sunday afternoon, the UFC announced the main event for this anticipated return to Mexico. This main event will occur at flyweight, where Mexico’s own Brandon Moreno will take on established star Sergio Pettis. The two talents, who stand out as perhaps the brightest contenders in the division, will battle to take a huge step up the flyweight ladder, and perhaps even earn a shot at dominant divisional king Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson.

Unfortunate news surfaced this week that former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis was targeted by someone committing a violent act as they set fire to cars in Pettis’ driveway. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the fires, however ‘Showtime’ released a statement via social media about the situation, requesting that anyone with information turn in in to police.

With just over a week to go until the UFC hits Portland, Oregon, top ranked UFC flyweight Sergio Pettis has been forced to withdraw from the card. Pettis, who currently sits at #15 on the UFC’s official flyweight rankings, was slated to face #9 ranked flyweight Louis Smolka on the main card of the event. Unfortunately however, he was forced to withdraw from the fight due to a “minor injury” according to his coach, Duke Roufus.
