Stephen Thompson issues statement on controversial UFC 209 loss to Tyron Woodley

Last November, in the co-main event of UFC 205, Stephen Thompson stepped into the Octagon to challenge Tyron Woodley for the UFC welterweight title. Unfortunately, the fight ended in a majority draw, which meant Thompson did not become the champion.

Last weekend, in the main event of UFC 209, Thompson got a second crack at Woodley. Unfortunately for the challenger, he lost the fight via controversial majority decision, which marked his second failed attempt to unseat the current welterweight king.

In the wake of this win, which has generated significant debate amongst the members of the MMA community, Thompson provided a statement to Fox Sports.

“Last night was not the outcome I wanted,” Thompson said in this statement. “I wanted that title more than anything, but it didn’t go my way. Tyron is a great fighter, a deserving champion, and a worthy opponent.”

While Thompson is clearly disappointed with the result of this fight, he added that he expects to fight Woodley for a third time down the road, and that he plans to get back on the horse as soon as possible.

“We’ll fight again, I know it,” Thompson said of a possible third bout with Woodley. 

“In the meantime, I’m gonna go home and see my dogs, hang out with my family, and just appreciate the fact that I get to do what I do for a living,” the karate specialist continued. “I am blessed by everyone’s support and love and hope that every time I step on that canvas that love is repaid.”

“I welcome the next challenge with open arms and a full heart,” he concluded.
