Stephen Thompson and Tyron Woodley go at it on Twitter

By Tom Taylor - January 9, 2017

On Sunday night, Stephen Thompson took to Twitter to announce that he had signed a contract to rematch Tyron Woodley at UFC 209 – just as we reported he would back in December. In this Tweet, “Wonderboy” included a picture of his signed contract, and made sure to goad Woodley on a bit.

“Waiting on you [Tyron Woodley],” the welterweight contender said.

Woodley, who doesn’t typically shy away from a good Twitter exchange, was quick to respond.

From there, the two fighters engaged in a memorable back-and-forth, as fans chimed in to stoke the flames.

Woodley closed out this heated exchange by sharing a screenshot of some stats from his first fight with Thompson, hoping to prove that the fight shouldn’t have been a draw, but a victory for him.

Woodley and Thompson’s first fight occurred in the co-main event of UFC 205 back in November. Though Woodley was certainly behind the fights bigger moments, Wonderboy seemed to be in control for the rest of the fight – which resulted in their controversial majority draw.

Woodley entered his bout with Thompson having knocked out Robbie Lawler to win the UFC welterweight title in July of 2016. Thompson, meanwhile entered the fight on a seven-fight win-streak, which included triumphs over top competition in Robert Whittaker, Patrick Cote, Jake Ellenberger, Johny Hendricks and Rory MacDonald.

Though their draw would seem to imply an immediate rematch, Woodley has been vocal in his desire to move on from a fight with Thompson and participate in a lucrative money fight. To this end, he has asked for fights with both Nick Diaz, and UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping – though it appears he’ll have to settle is score with Thompson before either of these opportunities materialize.
