Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson recalls the moment he decided to do MMA
Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson was 57-0 prior to making the jump to professional MMA. Now, with a 12-1 professional MMA record which includes a 1st round TKO win over former champion Johny Hendricks, Thompson is preparing for his #1 contender scrap with Rory MacDonald.
Ahead of the fight, Thompson spoke to the BrisbaneTimes to recall the moment that he knew it was time to change over to MMA:
“Going to that first UFC I was like ‘man, I want to do this stuff’,” he said.
“I was already training jiu jitsu at the time but my main focus was kickboxing so I put that on the backburner.
“I didn’t focus on that for a long time until the day I got the call from Georges St Pierre, asking me to come to TriStar to help him be a sparring partner for his camp, so they were my inspiration to switch over to MMA.”
Do you think Thompson will be able to defeat MacDonald on Saturday and get a title shot at the winner of Lawler vs. Woodley at UFC 201?
