Stipe Miocic eyeing potential showdown with Anthony Joshua

UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic is fresh off his second UFC heavyweight title defense over former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos, however the champ already has his sights set on another potential marquee fight.

Given the fact that talks of a potential Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather boxing match have dominated MMA headlines, and the fight is coming closer and closer to becoming official, Stipe Miocic is looking to hopefully lock down a fight with recently crowned heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua.

He spoke on The MMA Hour:

“If the fight happens, me against Joshua would be a great fight,” Miocic said appearance on “The MMA Hour.” “I think I’d surprise a lot of people, I think it’d be an amazing fight … let’s do it! He’s a great guy. He’s tough, he’s a champion for a reason. I think I’d give him a run for his money.”

“I do a lot of boxing and I’ve boxed before, working on my boxing I think I’d be fine. “He’s a tough guy, he’s the best in the world. But, I’m pretty tough, too,”

While Miocic is coming off his recent win over Junior dos Santos, Joshua is coming off a major TKO win over Wladimir Klitschko that saw him not only retain the IBF heavyweight title, but also win the vacant WBA and IBO heavyweight titles over one of the greatest heavyweight boxers ever. The win over Klitschko extended Joshua’s professional record to 19-0, adding onto the already impressive resume of the 27 year old British star.

With Conor McGregor’s side of a potential Floyd Mayweather fight deal done, it will be interesting to see whether or not a fight is finalized, and the precedent such a matchup would set for other combat sports athletes looking to fight across different sports.
