MMA legends Chuck Liddell & Tito Ortiz may both currently be retired from MMA, however the pair recently reignited their rivalry once again. The pair did a staredown photo for media members recently, in a photo that was posted by Liddell captioned: “Why not?” Ortiz then fired back at his longtime rival, saying:

There has been quite a bit of buzz surrounding a potential return to competition for former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell. There was talk from his longtime coach John Hackleman saying his blessing would depend on who the opponent is and Liddell himself did not give a definitive answer on if we will be seeing him fight again. There was also the lunch meeting between Bellator boss Scott Coker and Lidell. More speculation grew when Liddell posted a photo of him and longtime rival Tito Ortiz in a staredown photo they took together where Liddell said in the caption, “Why not?”

Tito Ortiz was one of the first superstars in the UFC and Tuesday marked the 20th anniversary of Ortiz’s professional mixed martial arts debut, making his way into the Octagon for the first time in 1997 at UFC 13. “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” fought twice at UFC 13, winning a first round TKO over Wes Albritton and then losing to Guy Mezger by guillotine choke submission. In 2012, former UFC champion Tito Ortiz competed in the UFC for the final time as he was handed his third straight loss, his 7th over the course of the past 8 fights. Ortiz then signed with Bellator MMA in 2014. When Ortiz made his highly anticipated Bellator debut, he did so against Alexander Shlemenko, where he picked up a 1st round submission win over the Bellator MMA vet, marking his first win in three years. In his next fight, Ortiz stepped into the cage for a highly anticipated grudge match with fellow UFC veteran Stephan Bonnar. Ortiz won the fight via split decision. Unfortunately for Ortiz, in his next fight he dropped his next fight to Liam McGeary in a failed bid for the Bellator MMA title.

Back in January, in the main event of Bellator 170, three-time UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen returned from a lengthy hiatus to take on retiring MMA legend Tito Ortiz. Though Sonnen was able to threaten Ortiz with a submission attempt in the early moments of this fight, he ultimately found himself locked up in a rear-naked choke mid-way through the first round, and was forced to tap as a result. Unfortunately for Ortiz, this win was marred by controversy, as many fans suggested Sonnen threw the fight, and Sonnen later suggested Ortiz verbally tapped to his early submission attempt.

Earlier this year, UFC veteran Chael Sonnen stepped into the Bellator MMA cage with UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz for a highly anticipated grudge match in the main event of Bellator 170. Ultimately, Ortiz picked up a 1st round submission win, catching Sonnen in a rear naked choke after Sonnen let go of a Japanese Necktie submission. Prior to that however, Sonnen had Ortiz caught in a guillotine, where he says that Ortiz verbally tapped out.

Ortiz won this fight in impressive fashion, tapping Sonnen with a rear-naked choke in the first round to ride off into the sunset on a win. Unfortunately, Ortiz’s big win was marred by widespread speculation that the fight might have been fixed. Many fans, and even a few reputable MMA media members, questioned the legitimacy of Ortiz’s win, saying that it didn’t look like his choke was properly locked up.

Last Saturday, Bellator MMA returned to our screens with Bellator 170, an exciting card in Los Angeles, California. This card’s headlining slot was filled by a light heavyweight bout between retiring MMA legend Tito Ortiz, and fan favorite Chael Sonnen, who was returning from a hiatus of three years. Though many expect Sonnen to be too much for the aging Ortiz, Ortiz actually ended up winning this one handily, submitting Sonnen with a rear-naked choke just over two minutes into the first round.
