TJ Dillashaw discusses Cody Garbrandt’s future: “I really don’t believe he’s got a chin”

Last night, in the main event of UFC 227, UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw defended his title against the very man he won it from, former UFC bantamweight champ Cody Garbrandt. Just as he did in their first fight, which co-headlined UFC 217 in November, Dillashaw won this fight by knockout — but this time he did it even faster.

Now 0-2 against the current champion, with both losses coming by way of knockout, the future looks nebulous for Garbrandt. Although he remains an incredibly dangerous challenge for most fighters, he will have to move mountains in order to earn another title shot as long as Dillashaw is king.

Speaking at the UFC 227 post-fight press conference, TJ Dillashaw gave his take on Cody Garbrandt’s uncertain future in the division. In his eyes, Garbrandt might be wise to change his fighting style, as he might not have the chin required to survive the high-action exchanges he favours.

“I think he has some technical problems that he needs to fix,” Dillashaw said at UFC 227’s post-fight press conference (via MMA Fighting). “And I really don’t believe he’s got a chin. He plays a dangerous game. He likes to get in there and he likes to slug it.”

However the future unfolds for Garbrandt, Dillashaw is happy to have picked up a second, violent win over his arch rival.

“I wasn’t going to let off,” Dillashaw said of the stoppage. “There’s no way. I’m too mean. I’m gonna go until I win. I didn’t have a problem giving him a little extra, too. That knee was a pretty hard knee. I felt that one and that finished him off.

“I’m in too good of shape to let up the throttle. He’s not gonna be able to recover. I’m gonna be able to push the pace always.”
