According to Ferguson’s Brazilian jiu-jitsu coach Eddie Bravo, this brutal LCL injury is now soundly in the rear-view mirror. We won’t be seeing any lingering side-effects of it come fight time.

In October of 2017, Tony Ferguson captured the interim lightweight title with a submission defeat of Kevin Lee. In April of 2018, he was scheduled to fight top contender Khabib Nurmagomedov in a bout that would crown the winner the undisputed lightweight champion. Unfortunately, Tony Ferguson was forced out of this fight with a freak injury. Khabib Nurmagomedov wound up defeating short-notice replacement opponent Al Iaquinta to win the undisputed title, while Ferguson was quietly stripped of his interim title.

Well, it seems that Tony Ferguson’s recent teasings of a return at UFC 229 weren’t for nothing! The former interim champion is officially back. MMAJunkie has confirmed that Ferguson will square off with the former UFC and WEC lightweight champion Anthony “Showtime” Pettis on the October 6th event. If the bout will take place as the new co-main event is yet to be determined. The event’s current co-main event is set to be the heavyweight clash between Alexander Volkov and Derrick Lewis.

Tony Ferguson’s year has not been off to a great start. Though he was scheduled for a UFC 223 lightweight title fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov, he was unfortunately forced out of the bout at the last minute when he sustained a knee injury whilst taking care of some media obligations for the card. With his lightweight title dreams temporarily dashed, Ferguson went under the knife in an effort to repair his injured knee.

One of the topics of conversation was Tony Ferguson, who Lee lost to in an interim title bout in October of 2017. Ferguson was recently supposed to battle Khabib Nurmagomedov for the UFC lightweight title at UFC 223, but was unfortunately forced out of the fight with a freak leg injury just a week ahead of the event. Ferguson then went under the knife to repair this injury, and is currently recovering from surgery.

Regrettably, Ferguson sustained a freak injury just days ahead of the fight, and was ultimately replaced by Al Iaquinta, who battled Nurmagomedov in a last-minute title fight. Nurmagomedov won this fight by unanimous decision. Since then, Ferguson has sought to discredit Nurmagomedov’s title win on the basis that it came against the UFC’s 11th-ranked lightweight on only one day’s notice. And now, Iaquinta has intervened.

Regrettably, Ferguson sustained a freak knee injury while going about his UFC 223 media obligations, and was replaced by Max Holloway, who was later replaced by Al Iaquinta. On Monday, Ferguson went under the knife to repair the injured knee that forced him out of UFC 223. Shortly thereafter, he shared a photo of his post-surgery wound to Instagram, and let’s just say it’s going to leave one hell of a scar.

Over the weekend, in the main event of UFC 223, Khabib Nurmagomedov thwarted a last minute opponent Al Iaquinta, moving to a flawless 26-0 overall, and capturing the UFC lightweight title in the process. With a UFC belt finally wrapped around his waist, Nurmagomedov can look forward to any number of interesting options going forward. There’s Georges St-Pierre, who he called out post-fight. There’s Conor McGregor, the former champion. And of course, there’s former interim champ Tony Ferguson, who Nurmagomedov has been booked to fight a whopping four times to no avail.
