Recently, top ranked UFC lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov was forced out of his UFC 209 co-main event scrap with Tony Ferguson after being unable to make the lightweight title fight limit of 155 pounds. Nurmagomedov was taken to the hospital in the early hours of the morning after enduring a tremendous amount of pain. Ultimately, after Nurmagomedov was pulled from the card for being unable to compete, Tony Ferguson was also pulled from the card. While there were initially no details regarding when Nurmagomedov would be able to return to the Octagon, his father revealed during a recent interview that ‘The Eagle’ was doing “good” health-wise, and had visited several physicians. In addition, it was revealed that ‘The Eagle’ was looking to return for a title fight in August or September, after he finished his observance of Ramadan.

Top ranked UFC lightweight contender Tony Ferguson recently found himself without a fight when his UFC 208 opponent, Khabib Nurmagomedov, was forced out of their co-main event interim lightweight title fight the day before they were set to throw down. Following Nurmagomedov’s withdrawal from the fight, Ferguson was left without an opponent after he & the UFC were able to reach an agreement over a fill-in opponent on 24 hours notice.

Last November, in the main event of the blockbuster UFC 205, Ireland’s Conor McGregor knocked out Eddie Alvarez to win the UFC lightweight title. With this win, the already sought-after superstar became the target of the lightweight division’s top contenders – namely Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson. Regrettably for fighters like Nurmagomedov and Ferguson, McGregor quickly sniffed out the next most lucrative possibility for his career – and it doesn’t involve an immediate defense of his lightweight title. Instead, the Irishman has become transfixed on the possibility of a boxing mega-fight with recently un-retired star Floyd Mayweather, and with Mayweather interested too, there seems to be a real possibility that this fight happens.

Recently, UFC lightweights Michael Chiesa and Tony Ferguson have gone toe to toe in various interviews as ‘The Maverick’ and ‘El Cucuy’ have continued to trade barbs back and forth following Chiesa’s callout of the top ranked lightweight contender. Following Chiesa’s callout of Ferguson for an interim lightweight title fight, Ferguson shut down the idea, explaining that fight with Chiesa wasn’t appealing to him, and that he would prefer to fight Nate Diaz.

Unfortunately, his planned UFC 209 interim title fight with fellow contender Khabib Nurmagomedov was scrapped at the last minute, which deprived him of the opportunity to vie for UFC gold. Now more than a week removed from this disappointing twist, Ferguson has shifted his gaze to the future, and he’s not sure Nurmagomedov is part of that future for him. While there has been widespread discussion about rescheduling this Ferguson vs. Nurmagomedov bout, Ferguson is instead interested in a fight with fan favorite Nate Diaz.

The card produced plenty in the way of memorable finishes, as Kelvin Gastelum zapped Vitor Belfort in the main event, and aging Pride legend Mauricio “Shogun” Rua dazzled with a third-round stoppage of Gian Villante in the co-main event. Of the many impressive stoppages on this card, however, none were quite as jaw-dropping as Edson Barboza’s knockout of fellow lightweight contender Beneil Dariush, which he produced with a rocket-fuelled flying knee to the chin. With this win, Barboza extended his win-streak, as he has defeated former UFC lightweight champ Anthony Pettis and former Strikeforce lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez in his next most recent bouts. Riding high off these wins, Barboza is now eager for a shot at lightweight gold – but not against undisputed champ Conor McGregor, who is currently transfixed on a possible boxing mega-fight with Floyd Mayweather.

Unfortunately, the day of weigh-ins, reports began to emerge that Nurmagomedov had been hospitalized prior to the weigh-in, and given IV fluids. Ultimately, Nurmagomedov was pulled from the fight, and the fight was scrapped. Now, Tony Ferguson is speaking out against the UFC for allegedly paying him “less than half” of his reported $250,000 show money. He spoke to MMAJunkie:

Unfortunately, Alvarez “dodged” a fight with Chiesa, and instead signed on for a fight with fellow lightweight talent Dustin Poirier. With this desired Alvarez fight off the table, Chiesa now has his sights set on an even bigger fight. The Ultimate Fighter 8 winner is hoping for a bout with Tony Ferguson.

This past weekend at UFC 209, top ranked lightweights Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson were set to face off in the co-main event for the interim lightweight title. Unfortunately, the day of weigh-ins, Nurmagomedov was forced to go to the hospital as he was in need of IV fluids. Ultimately, The Eagle was forced out of the fight, and the UFC was forced to scrap the fight as a whole after being unable to find Tony Ferguson a suitable opponent on such short notice. UFC President Dana White then spoke later in the day at a press conference, revealing that the fight could have been saved had Nurmagomedov’s team not gone “rogue”.

Regrettably, it did so without the card’s originally planned co-main event, an interim lightweight title fight between streaking contender Tony Ferguson and undefeated Dagestani star Khabib Nurmagomedov. This fight was scrapped on the eve of battle when Nurmagomedov was hospitalized in the midst of his cut down to 155 pounds. Initially, Ferguson seemed quite understanding of Nurmagomedov’s withdrawal from the card. Since then, however, his tone has changed significantly.

Just hours before his scheduled UFC 209 weigh-in, news has now surfaced from various outlets that undefeated Dagestani lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov has been taken to the hospital just hours before the scheduled weigh-in. The news was first reported by Russian news outlets, before teammates then reportedly confirmed news of ‘The Eagle’ being taken to the hospital.
