Tyron Woodley News
Barring injury, there's only one thing that would stop Jorge Masvidal from fighting Tyron Woodley this July
Tom Taylor - May 11, 2017
This Saturday, on the main card of a blockbuster UFC 211, Jorge Masvidal will battle Demian Maia in what appears to be a welterweight number one contender fight. If Masvidal wins this fight and earns a title shot, of course, his title shot would pit him against an old friend and training partner in Tyron Woodley. On a recent interview on BJ Penn Radio, Masvidal explained that, while fighting a former teammate for the title is not ideal, he’s prepared to do so if that’s what it comes to. During his segment on the show, Masvidal was also asked if he’d be willing to fight Woodley as soon as July. The champ, after all, been calling for a July title defense, but has had a difficult time finding a suitable opponent.

This weekend, on the main card of UFC 211, Demian Maia will risk the welterweight title shot many fans feel he has already earned when he takes on dangerous contender Jorge Masvidal. In the opinion of welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, Maia’s accepting this fight was not a smart move. The champ has now said on several occasions that he believes Masvidal – his former American Top Team stablemate – will earn the win, and deprive Maia of his long-awaited shot. On the latest episode of BJ Penn Radio, Masvidal weighed in on these comments from Woodley, and on the possibility of fighting his former teammate for the belt.
Demian Maia responds to criticism from Tyron Woodley
bjpenndotcom - May 6, 2017
Recently, UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley has been rather frustrated with his inability to find a challenger for his welterweight belt. The welterweight champion stated earlier this month that while he would like to fight in July, nobody is prepared to step up and challenge him for the belt. Woodley took specific aim at UFC welterweight contender Demian Maia, who opted to sign to fight Jorge Masvidal at UFC 211 next weekend rather than sit and wait for a title shot against the winner of Woodley vs. Thompson II.

Now, Woodley has his sights set on a July return to the Octagon, however the champ is struggling to find an opponent. While Demian Maia was initially expected to be the next challenger to Woodley’s belt, Maia then signed to fight Jorge Masvidal in a fight which has not happened yet.
Rory MacDonald: Tyron Woodley being UFC champ makes me look better
Tom Taylor - April 20, 2017
Having defended the welterweight title twice – albeit in two close fights with the same man – UFC welterweight titleholder Tyron Woodley is looking like he could emerge as a pretty dominant champion. We do, however, know that he can be beaten. Rory MacDonald was the most recent fighter to prove this. MacDonald beat Woodley in June of 2014, outworking him to a unanimous decision win. In the years since then, the two fighters have diverged on very different paths, with Woodley claiming UFC welterweight gold, and MacDonald departing from the UFC to set up shop under the Bellator MMA banner.

Despite two valiant efforts, Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson has now failed twice to swipe the UFC welterweight title from Tyron Woodley. Given this, he will now re-enter the exciting welterweight contendership race in an effort to earn himself a third crack at gold. Speaking with BJPenn.com’s Chris Taylor, Thompson gave his take on what should be next for Woodley in the meantime. While the logical answer is Demian Maia, who will look to solidify his number one contender status against Jorge Masvidal this May, Thompson doesn’t believe it’s quite that simple.

Tom Taylor - April 4, 2017
Last month, in the main event of UFC 209, Stephen Thompson came up short in a rematch with welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, failing to capture the UFC welterweight crown in the process. Now exactly a month removed from this second battle with Woodley, Stephen Thompson deconstructed the fight with BJPenn.com’s Chris Taylor. “Tyron was kind of very laid back in the fight,” Thompson said of what surprised him most about the rematch. “[He was] kind of slow. He was backing up a lot – well pretty much the whole fight – so it didn’t make for an entertaining fight. There was a lot of respect there [between us]. I want my next fight to be with someone who likes to push the pace. I think the fans would really enjoy a fight between myself and Carlos Condit or Nick Diaz.”

Over the last year, the UFC has been criticized on several occasions for booking fights that focus more on entertainment than they do on legitimate ranking-based matchmaking. Former featherweight champion Conor McGregor‘s immediate lightweight title shot against Eddie Alvarez, for example, was initially criticized. So too was former bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey‘s recent title shot against reigning champ Amanda Nunes. And then of course, there’s the latest example: former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre’s immediate middleweight title shot against Michael Bisping. All of these matchups have generated backlash for awarding the title shot to a fighter that has not necessarily earned the top contender spot.
Artem Lobov tells Tyron Woodley to stop "crying and moaning like a little b*tch"

Last night, in the co-main event of UFC London, Icelandic grappling specialist Gunnar Nelson scored an extremely impressive submission win over a game Alan Jouban. With this win, Nelson reminded the world why he’s considered one of the best welterweights on earth, and set himself up for some massive fights in the stacked welterweight division. Nelson, of course, has never been much of a talker, so impressive wins like this are very important for him when it comes to maintaining the interest of the fans. In the wake of Nelson’s win, his training partner Artem Lobov took to Twitter to express his belief that fighters should do their talking in the cage, rather than outside of it. In this Tweet, he directly addressed UFC welterweight champ Tyron Woodley, who has recently generated some controversy by calling himself the worst treated champ in UFC history, and claiming that he frequently deals with racism, even as a UFC champ.

While both men stated prior to the fight that they were looking to go out and erase any doubts from their first meeting, where Woodley took a majority draw to retain the welterweight strap, the rematch was a rather lackluster affair that saw Thompson back Woodley against the cage as both men remained hesitant to open up with strikes. Ultimately, the fight was scored a majority decision for Woodley, who retained the belt once again.

Tom Taylor - March 14, 2017
Over the last few months, UFC welterweight titleholder Tyron Woodley has generated some controversy among fans by suggesting that he deals with racism, even as a UFC champion. “If you look at the history of our sport – and it’s not even our sport, the history of the American culture – certain things are subliminally embraced that are racist,” Woodley said on a January episode of The MMA Hour. “When you say to me ‘Tyron, you are well spoken’, what does that mean? Does that mean I’m well spoken comparable to all the mixed martial artists, the 500 UFC fighters on the roster? Or does that mean as a black male in America?”
