Last Saturday, in the co-main event of UFC 205, UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley attempted the first defense of his crown against streaking striker Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. Given the finishing ability shared by these two fighters, many fans and pundits expected this title fight to end emphatically, one way or the other. In the end, however, it was as close as they come. After five frenzied rounds of action that saw both men enjoy plenty of success, this fight was ruled a majority draw. With this result, Woodley held on to the welterweight title – though probably not in quite the fashion that he planned.

UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is coming off a remarkable performance against Stephen Thompson at UFC 205, which saw ‘The Chosen One’ retain his title after an epic five-round war with ‘Wonderboy’ was ruled a majority draw. During Friday’s UFC 205 weigh ins, the UFC welterweight champion had a pair of altercations with Irish superstar Conor McGregor. Neither run-in resulted in anything serious but it was clear that ‘Mystic Mac’ was trying to get under ‘The Chosen One’s’ skin.

The pair’s tooth-and-nail battle was so competitive that it culminated in a rare, majority draw. With this uncommon result, Woodley retains his title – though surely not in the fashion he intended. With the belt still wrapped around his waist, the champ now shifts his focus to his next challenge. And though UFC President Dana White suggested that challenge would be an immediate rematch with Thompson, Woodley recently explained that he wouldn’t mind taking on streaking contender Demian Maia at UFC 207 this December 30. The pair’s five-round battle was so competitive that the end result was a majority draw. Given the nature of Woodley’s war with Thompson, all signs immediately pointed to a rematch between the two. UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley left Madison Square Garden with his title following an epic five-round war with Stephen Thompson in the evenings co-main event. “The Chosen One” and “Wonderboy” battled to a majority draw, this after two judges scored the fight 47-47 and one judge scored the contest in favor of T-Wood 48-47.

In the co-main event of UFC 205, UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley stepped into the Octagon in hopes of defending his welterweight title for the first time. Woodley was quick to take Stephen Thompson down in the first round, landing some ground & pound to bloody up Wonderboy’s face. Thompson went on to pick Woodley apart, pressuring the champ against the cage in the second and third rounds. In the fourth round, things got interesting as Woodley dropped Thompson, nearly finishing him via KO before then nearly finishing the fight via submission. Somehow, Thompson managed to survive the round, and then come back in the fifth in impressive fashion as he outstruck Woodley.

Woodley walked past McGregor, who appeared to nod at Woodley. When ‘The Chosen One’ didn’t reciprocate the gesture, McGregor continued to eye the welterweight champ down.

While both men are slated to fight different opponents, one would think the pair are slated to fight each other. Backstage footage showed Woodley walking into the room, and McGregor eyeing him down. When Woodley noticed what McGregor was doing, he appeared to say something to him before walking off.

This weekend, in the co-main event of the blockbuster UFC 205, new welterweight champion Tyron Woodley will attempt the first defense of his title against streaking karate specialist Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. In advance of this massive welterweight showdown, Woodley’s current coach Duke Roufus appeared on Monday’s episode of The MMA Hour to discuss his student’s looming challenge. On the show, Roufus was asked for a prediction as to how the match will go, and likened it to a 1971 boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. The bout, which was the first of three between the two boxing legends, saw Frazier upset Ali with a unanimous decision win. In Roufus’ mind, Woodley will play the part of Frazier.
