UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley will look to defend his title for the first time in the co-main attraction of next month’s UFC 205 event in New York when he takes on top contender Stephen Thompson. That same evening at Madison Square Garden, current UFC featherweight title holder Conor McGregor will move up a weight class to challenge current UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez for his 155-pound strap.

In exactly three weeks, UFC welterweight champion Tyron ‘The Chosen One’ Woodley will step into the Octagon in the co-main event of UFC 205 for his first title defense. The fight, which is slated to be against dynamic striker Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson, is one that has fight fans split down the middle in regards to who they think will win. Ahead of the fight, Woodley has enlisted the help of young standout Sage Northcutt, who is now training at Roufusport in Milwaukee with Woodley for the fight.

Earlier this year, in the main event of UFC 201, Tyron Woodley smashed Robbie Lawler to win the UFC welterweight title. Shortly after this massive win, it came time for the new champ to set his sights on his first defense. From a rankings standpoint, there could be no other option for that first defense than the streaking Stephen Thompson. When Thompson’s name came up, however, Woodley made no secret of the fact that this prospective fight didn’t really interest him.

At the end of July, Tyron Woodley left the MMA community stunned as he picked up a spectacular first round knockout win over Robbie Lawler in the main event of UFC 203. The win not only earned Woodley the UFC welterweight championship, but marked just the second time over the course of Lawler’s fifteen year professional MMA career that he had been stopped. Following the win, Woodley opted to challenge former welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre and MMA veteran Nick Diaz to fights, rather than look for a fight with welterweight #1 contender Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson. While Woodley caught criticism for the move, he ultimately was booked to fight Stephen Thompson at UFC 205.

Unfortunately, those steps would not go as he planned, as he was put away by Mickey Gall in the first frame. Despite this emphatic loss, however, Punk seems hellbent on getting back on the horse and taking another fight – whether that fight is inside the UFC’s Octagon, or in the cage of another promotion like Bellator. In fact, the pro wrestling star is already training to that end, sharpening his tools alongside monsters like former lightweight champ Anthony Pettis and current UFC welterweight champ Tyron Woodley at Duke Roufus’ Milwaukee gym.

“Last week, the UFC’s Fight Pass Twitter page made an egregious faux paux when they tweeted a link celebrating Nate Marquart’s 2012 knockout of Tyron Woodley for the vacant Strikeforce welterweight belt before the promotion was folded into the UFC. The tweet came on the heels of an announcement of a fight between Marquardt and Tamdan McRory, with the caption reading:

In addition to Tyron Woodley going into his UFC 205 title fight with Stephen Thompson, in the UFC’s historic inaugural event at the Madison Square Garden, with the UFC welterweight championship, he’s also going into the fight as an underdog. After the fight was announced earlier this month, current betting odds on Bovada have Woodley as a +150 underdog ahead of the fight, with Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson coming in as a -185 favorite.

Later this year, the UFC will have its historic inaugural event in New York when they hit the Madison Square Garden for UFC 205 on November 12th. The event is expected to play host to several high profile matchups including at least one title fight. While there has been no official word yet on a fight which was expected to be between Conor McGregor and Eddie Alvarez, UFC President Dana White has recently stated that it will be Khabib Nurmagomedov who gets the title shot against Alvarez.

UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley has had a bit of a rough time since becoming UFC welterweight champion. Woodley knocked out Robbie Lawler in the main event of UFC 201 in July, however according to ‘The Chosen One’ he hasn’t been celebrated as a champion. After winning the belt, Woodley revealed in an interview that racist fans had emerged and were frequently making racist comments to him on social media.

When Stephen Thompson extended his win-streak to seven with a June win over Rory MacDonald, he seemed like a shoo-in for a shot at the winner of Robbie Lawler and Tyron Woodley’s July welterweight title fight. When Woodley stole Lawler’s title with a blistering, first-round KO, however, Thompson’s future became far less clear. Immediately after the win, Woodley began expressing his interest in welterweight “money fights” with superstars like Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz. At the same time, he expressed a complete disinterest in Thompson being his first title challenger. Even when the ever-courteous Thompson tried his hand at trash-talk, saying Woodley seemed “scared,” the champ wouldn’t budge.

Earlier this month, #3 ranked welterweight Demian Maia stepped into the Octagon to fight former interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit in a highly anticipated showdown of welterweights with different styles. While Condit hoped to keep the fight standing and get a TKO win, Maia was able to take the fight to the ground and submit ‘The Natural Born Killer’ in the very first round of their main event scrap.
