Tyron Woodley fires back at Kelvin Gastelum after recent rematch comments
Back in 2015, Tyron Woodley stepped into the cage for a bout with The Ultimate Fighter 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum, who missed the welterweight limit by 10 pounds. On that night, Woodley walked away with a close, split decision win.
Years later, Gastelum still feels he won the fight, and that the cage-side judges should have sided with him over Woodley. Though he’s now firmly embedded as a member of the UFC middleweight roster, he hopes to return to the welterweight division in the future for a do-over with Woodley; for a chance to “make it right.”
“That fight kind of has a splinter in me,” Gastelum said during a recent media lunch promoting his UFC 224 middleweight contender bout with Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza. “It’s like a splinter in my heart, you know? I kind of want to get that fight back. Make the weight, make it right. Like you said, in a lot of people’s eyes, including myself, I won that fight.”
Tyron Woodley, who won the welterweight title shortly after his 2015 defeat of Gastelum and has not relinquished it since, has heard these comments, and he’s not particularly impressed.
On Sunday, the champ fired back at Gastelum for his recent comments, suggesting the only thing he won was a pre-fight easting contest.

🙄 WTF has I sport turned to. Only thing he won was the eating contest the day before. https://t.co/5IDfmPt5Gg

“WTF has this sport turned into?” Woodley said in his Tweet. “Only thing he won was the eating contest the day before.”
At present, Tyron Woodley is recovering from surgery. That said, he’s expected return to the cage later this year, probably against the winner of Rafael dos Anjos and Colby Covington‘s interim welterweight title fight, which co-headlines UFC 225 on June 9.
