Tyron Woodley is hoping to get Colby Covington bounced from American Top Team
There was a time not all that long ago, when UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and new interim welterweight champion Colby Covington trained under the same roof at American Top Team in Florida. Today, however, they are perhaps the fiercest rivals in MMA.
Woodley, of course, no longer trains at American Top Team. All the same, he believes he still holds some sway at the gym, and is hoping he can get Covington kicked to the curb after they unify their titles.
“I talked to [ATT co-founder] Dan Lambert today,” Woodley said Monday on The MMA Hour. “I told him that after I whoop [Covington’s] ass I want him off the team. He’s a disgrace to American Top Team, the tradition it was rooted in. He’s a disgrace to the sport and a mockery to the toughest and best division in the UFC’s history, the welterweight division.”
Woodley also gave his take on how his previous training with Covington went. Covington, to remind, claims he used to dominate Woodley on the mats.
“He was brought in to help me train for Rory MacDonald and I have never met a lazier piece of shit than Colby Covington,” Woodley said. “When it was time to wrestle, ask him how many takedowns he actually scored on me. Zero. Ask him why he turned blue like a fucking blueberry when I was choking him out and he refused to tap.”
While Woodley is hoping Covington will be ejected from American Top Team after their fight, it’s worth noting that Covington seems to have a fairly strong relationship with Lambert. In fact, Covington said he shared a very special moment with the ATT co-founder after he won the interim title at UFC 225.
“[I just want to give a] big shout out to my agent, Dan Lambert,” Covington said on the latest episode of BJPENN.COM Radio. “It was a special moment [at UFC 225] outside the cage. There’s not many guys that are homegrown world champions from a gym. I came into American Top Team fresh out of college, didn’t know much about martial arts. [Lambert] took me in like his son, gave me a place to live. I had a lot of student debt, college debt. He made it so I could just focus on training and being a world champion. To be homegrown from American Top Team is so special, and the moment I had with Dan Lambert last night was truly a special night that I’ll never forget in my life, so a big thank you to him.”
