Submission ace Demian Maia returned to the octagon against Anthony Rocco Martin at tonight’s UFC Minneapolis event. The bout marked Maia’s 30th octagon appearance, joining Jim Miller, Jeremy Stephens and Donald Cerrone in the exclusive club. The Brazilian legend was last seen in action at February’s event in Fortaleza where he scored a submission victory over Lyman Good.

The upcoming UFC Minneapolis card, scheduled for June 29, will now be topped by an Octagon-shaking heavyweight showdown between former title challenger Francis Ngannou and former champion Junior dos Santos. The card was originally expected to be headlined by a rematch between former welterweight champions Robbie Lawler and Tyron Woodley, but this plan was nixed when the former sustained a hand injury and was forced out of the matchup.

Earlier today it was reported that Tyron Woodley was forced to pull out of his scheduled UFC Minneapolis main event fight against Robbie Lawler. The two were set to run it back following their first encounter at UFC 201. There, Woodley knocked out Lawler in the first round to become the new champion. “The Chosen One” was looking to get back on track after losing his belt to Kamaru Usman in his most recent octagon appearance at UFC 235. But, a hand injury has forced Woodley to pull out of the fight and he explained why on Instagram live.

The cause of his withdrawal is a hand injury, per ESPN reporter Brett Okamoto. BREAKING: Tyron Woodley has been forced to withdraw from his June 29 bout against Robbie Lawler due to injury, per sources. UFC looking for a replacement to keep Lawler on the card in Minneapolis. Following UFC 235 and former UFC welterweight champion “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler’s (18-3) somewhat controversial first-round submission loss to Ben Askren, the idea from UFC President Dana White was to run the fight back as soon as possible. Well, one of Lawler’s old fights will be ran back alright… But it won’t be that one. ESPN’s Brett Okamoto has since reported that verbal agreements are in place for Lawler to rematch with Askren’s good friend and teammate, the man who dethroned Lawler, Tyron Woodley (19-4-1) at UFC Minneapolis on June 29.
