Alexander Gustafsson announces retirement following loss to Anthony Smith

Former UFC title challenger Alexander Gustafsson has announced his retirement from mixed martial arts following his loss to Anthony Smith at UFC Stockholm. The 32-year-old, Gustafsson (18-6 MMA) suffered a fourth round submission loss to Smith in today’s headliner (watch that here).

The ‘Poster Boy’ is coming off three straight setbacks, his most recent being a knockout loss to Thiago Santos at December’s UFC 231 event in Toronto. Manuwa has gone 6-5 in his eleven career fights under the UFC banner.

A lightweight bout between Leonardo Santos and Stevie Ray took place on the prelims of today’s UFC Stockholm event in Sweden. Leonardo Santos (16-3-1 MMA) will return to action for the first time since UFC 204 in October of 2016. The former TUF Brazil winner, Santos, has gone 10-0-1 over his past eleven contests which includes a TKO victory over Kevin Lee.

Volkan Oezdemir expected to return the Octagon at UFC Stockholm this weekend opposite his friend Ilir Latifi. Unfortunately, Latifi was forced off the card at the last minute, leaving Switzerland’s Oezdemir without a dance partner. “Due to a back injury, Ilir Latifi has been forced to withdraw from his Saturday UFC Fight Night bout against Volkan Oezdemir,” the UFC announced in a statement.

All fighters scheduled for UFC Stockholm have made weight. The card is scheduled for tomorrow in Stockholm, Sweden and is headlined by Sweden’s own Alexander Gustafsson (18-5) vs Anthony Smith (31-14). Gustafsson was the first to be weighed and came in at 205 pounds. The former middleweight Smith hit the scales at 206 but made weight comfortably as he was still wearing shorts and socks. Both fighters are coming off a loss to light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, and will be looking to get back on track.
Ilir Latifi suffers last second injury, out of UFC Stockholm

On Saturday night, UFC Stockholm takes place as it is scheduled to showcase six of the top light heavyweights in the promotion in its final three bouts. Well, at least that was originally the case as Ilir Latifi is no longer going to be able to make the walk. The UFC released a statement Thursday that Sweden’s Latifi was forced out of his bout with Volkan Oezdemir due to injury.

Last weekend, the UFC touched down in Stockholm, Sweden with an exciting 12-fight card. In the main event, the fighting pride of Sweden himself, Alexander Gustafsson, scored an impressive, fifth-round knockout win over the dangerous Glover Teixeira. For Teixeira, things obviously didn’t go as planned – and not only because he got knocked out. The Brazilian finisher also sustained an unfortunate eye-poke mid-way through the fight, which he says affected him significantly, though he does not attribute his loss to this accidental foul.

On Sunday afternoon, the UFC returned to the beautiful country of Sweden with UFC Stockholm, an exciting 12-fight card that emanated from the city’s Ericsson Globe Arena. Atop this 12-fight card was a key light heavyweight showdown between the UFC’s number one and two ranked light heavyweight contenders: the pride of Sweden himself Alexander Gustafsson, and dangerous Brazilian finisher Glover Teixeira. In the end, this bout went to Gustafsson, who was clearly the faster, sharper man from the get-go. Though Teixeira demonstrated remarkable resolve and durability throughout the fight, he could only absorb Gustafsson’s crackling combinations for so long, and was ultimately put down by beautiful combination in the fifth.
