Alexander Gustafsson full of confidence ahead of Jon Jones rematch: ‘I know I can beat him’
At UFC 232, the rematch is on. Alexander Gustafsson will take on Jon Jones for the undisputed light heavyweight belt. Jones is making his return to the Octagon after a lengthy suspension courtesy of USADA, while Gustafsson will make his first trip to the Octagon in 2018.
Both fighters have fought for the belt in the past, but only Jones has won it. However, at UFC 165, Alexander Gustafsson took on Jones in a bout that is widely considered one of the greatest fights in UFC history. It was a back-and-forth affair for five rounds with Jones defeating Gustafsson by decision.
Looking back on that first fight, Gustafsson believes it was proof that he is on Jones’ level.
“Even if I lost that fight, I gained so much from it,” Gustafsson said to UFC.com. “After the fight, I knew I had the right skills and I’m on his level.”
While Jon Jones is considered the greatest light heavyweight fighter in MMA history, Alexander Gustafsson is confident he has what it takes to beat him.
“I know that he’s not unbeatable,” Gustafsson said. “I know he bleeds. I know I can beat him.”
Both fighters have said they are healthy and ready to fight again after their long layoffs. If that is the case, UFC fans should be in for another great fight. Jones will be looking to reaffirm his status as the light heavyweight GOAT, while Alexander Gustafsson is looking to finally become a UFC champion after two previous attempts failed.
UFC 232 is shaping up to be a great card already with more fights to be added. The main event is a fight all fans should be taking notice of.
