Amanda Nunes says getting 125-pound title is ‘possible’, would just require time

If you thought that UFC bantamweight and featherweight queen Amanda Nunes was kidding about trying to become a triple champ… Then guess again.

‘The Lioness’ has accomplished more in the sport than really anyone expected her to.

Starting her career as a very bright prospect in both of the divisions that she now holds titles in, Nunes would quickly finish her way to the top by dispatching some of the sports most iconic champions like Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousey.

After three-consecutive title defenses, Nunes returned to her original home of 145-pounds to take on the arguably greatest female fighter of all time in Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino.

As expected, Nunes was the underdog going in but in hindsight, one never would have guessed it.

Nunes took out the longtime ruler of the featherweights in just 51 seconds to become the first and only female dual division champion.

Since then, Nunes has said that her time at 145-pounds was just to capture that gold as she teased a drop to 125-pounds next. That, of course, prompted a response from her old rival, the now champion at 125, Valentina ‘Bullet’ Shevchenko.

However, it seems that Nunes wasn’t kidding around about the potential drop to the flyweight division.

“Every time I wake up, I see the belts, and I think I can get more, collect more,” Nunes told ESPN Brasil. “I know I have the capacity, so I have this will. It’s possible. But I need some time. I need a year to get ready. I’m not afraid, but I need time. If I go down this path I’ll take that belt, but I have to be ready.”

Regardless of weight class, whether or not we’ll actually end up seeing Nunes vs Shevchenko 3 in the future remains to be determined.

As for the foreseeable future, Shevchenko is expected to make her first title defense next against the resurgent Jessica Eye.

On the other hand, Nunes appears to be looking at a bout with another former champion in Holly Holm after Holm’s fight with Aspen Ladd at UFC 235 got canceled.
