Anderson Silva issues statement after loss to Jared Cannonier

By Tom Taylor - May 13, 2019

Over the weekend, in the co-main event of UFC 237, Anderson Silva looked to get back on track in front of thousands of Brazilian fans, as he stepped into the cage with surging middleweight contender Jared Cannonier. Regrettably for the middleweight legend and his legions of dedicated supporters, this outing didn’t go as planned. Instead, he was chopped down by a procession of crippling Cannonier leg kicks, ultimately losing by TKO after an apparent knee injury.

Speaking on his Instagram account post-fight, Anderson Silva issued a quick statement for his fans. The statement, made in his native Portuguese, relied heavily on metaphor, mentioning an old lion surrounded by hungry hyenas intent to devour him. The symbolism is clear.

“Speak my people.
ATE THE LIMIT … Pain is your friend …It shows that you’re not dead yet. They say that great symbols become great targets, perhaps … but the most important thing is not to get victimized if you fall, get up, get broken, no give up or think you can not because you lost a battle. The saying is one, I go to the end and the more I press but I will want to go to the end, there is nothing wild that feels sorry for itself, an old lion surrounded by hungry hyenas crazy to devour him and he yet he fights to the death without ever feeling sorry for himself, and will not be different with me !!!! Foça e Honor !!!” – Anderson Silva on Instagram.

With his loss to Jared Cannonier, Anderson Silva is now a tough 1-6 (1 NC) in his last eight fights. Do you think the time has come for the Brazilian MMA legend to hang up the gloves? Share your opinions on the topic in the comments section down below.
