Anderson Silva plans to ride off into the sunset after super-fight with Conor McGregor
Former UFC middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva will return to the octagon at February’s UFC 234 event against surging division contender Israel Adesanya.
“The Spider” recently completed a suspension from USADA, which stemmed from a failed drug test in the lead up to his scheduled fight with Kelvin Gastelum at UFC Shanghai.
USADA deemed Silva’s positive drug test, which was collected on October 26, 2017, a result of a contaminated supplement.
Anderson Silva has not stepped foot in the octagon since February of 2017, when he defeated Derek Brunson via decision at UFC 208.
The mixed martial arts legend recently told reporters that he will participate in three more fights and then call it a career.
“I have three more and then it’s done,” Silva said (via MMA Fighting). “It’s over.”
Now 43-years-old, Anderson Silva wants to make the most of his final three fights, and that includes a super-fight with former two-division champion Conor McGregor.
“At this point in my career, I believe that the good challenge is the superfight. I talk to Dana (White) about Georges St-Pierre, about Conor McGregor, about McGregor especially because McGregor is a challenge, this fight. I just talk to Dana a lot about the fight that’s very interesting, fight to this guy. Because he’s an amazing fighter and a legend in this sports and let’s go see. That’s a good game, superfights, and it’s very interesting for my fans.”
Silva continued:
“I believe 180 is good for me and McGregor. So I just wait because I don’t control this. This is the question for Dana but maybe that this is an amazing fight for the fans.”
While Anderson Silva may want former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor for his eventual swansong, he already has a stiff test ahead of him on February 19.
Silva will be taking on surging middleweight contender Israel Adesanya at UFC 234. “Stylebender” most recently competed at UFC 230 where he scored a first-round TKO victory over the aforementioned Derek Brunson.
Israel Adesanya will enter his bout with Anderson Silva sporting a perfect professional record of 15-0.
The 29-year-old has gone 4-0 during his 9-month career with the UFC.
UFC 234 takes place February 9 in Melbourne, Australia. The event is headlined by a middleweight title fight featuring reigning division champion Robert Whittaker taking on surging contender Kelvin Gastelum.
