Artem Lobov challenges the traditional interpretation of success in MMA

By Tom Taylor - February 5, 2019

Artem Lobov is often knocked for his professional record, which currently sits below the .500 mark at 14-15-1. That being said, the Russian-born Irishman has recently been vocal about the fact that his less-than-stellar record is the product of his taking on all comers at all times.

In fact, Artem Lobov believes he embodies success in MMA far more than your typical undefeated fighter, based on the fact that fans are always interested in seeing him perform.

“What do you call success in our sport? What determines success? Are you successful if you are 10-0 and no one is watching your fights? Is that success? trust me, your bank account will say otherwise,” Lobov said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on Monday (via MMAMania).

“Now that I’ve been in this sport for so long, I know this now more than ever what success is, it’s how many people are watching your fights,” he added. “If no one is watching, it doesn’t matter what else you are achieving, you are not successful. If people are watching your fights and they care about what you do then that is success to me. As far as I’m concerned, I am one of the most successful fighters in the world.”

These comments from Artem Lobov echo a recent statement from his head coach John Kavanagh, who praised the Russian-born Irishman after his decision loss to Michael Johnson.

Lobov, a long-time training partner of MMA superstar Conor McGregor, recently parted ways with the UFC. He’s now looking for a new home, and after calling out combat sports stars like Paulie Malignaggi, Amir Khan, Buakaw Banchamek, and Saenchai, he appears to be closing in on a deal with Bellator.
