Challenge Accepted: Anderson Silva agrees to fight Conor McGregor at a catchweight

By Chris Taylor - October 20, 2018

In the lead up to his highly anticipated octagon return against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229, Conor McGregor stated that he would be interested in a future fight with former middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva.

“You know what would be another great one? Anderson Silva.” Conor McGregor told ESPN when asked about potential future opponents.“I would be interested in an Anderson Silva bout. I swear to God. Anderson is a legend in the game. What’s the difference between him and Georges? Same damn thing. I’m going to do fights that interest me or have meaning.”

Despite the fact that Conor McGregor went on to suffer a fourth-round submission loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov in the main event of UFC 229, Anderson Silva still sees a lot of promise in a fight with the Irish superstar.

“The Spider”, who is still serving a one-year suspension from USADA, is eligible to return to action as of November 10 and says he plans on waiting for Conor McGregor.

“I’m waiting,” former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva told TMZ Sports. “Because I accept the challenge for Conor.”

Silva continued:

“I think UFC President Dana White needs to think about this,” Silva said. “Because it’s two big guys in this sport. Two big names – yes, absolutely, two big legends. And, why not?”

The one major issue with the proposed fight is that Conor McGregor normally competes at a much lighter weight class than Silva.

With that in mind, “The Spider” is willing to meet Conor McGregor at a catchweight of 180-pounds.

“I think 180 for me is good,” Silva suggested. “I think for Conor too. Because it’s a super fight, it’s not about weight class.”
