Chuck Liddell adamant Conor McGregor vs. Cowboy fight has to be PPV main event ‘no matter what’

Over the last few months, the fight world has been abuzz about a potential showdown between lightweight stars Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Conor McGregor. Both fighters seemed to like the matchup, UFC President Dana White was apparently on board, and of course, every fight fan with a pulse was eager to see it happen.

Unfortunately, it now sounds as though the fight has hit a snag. 

Both UFC commentator Joe Rogan and Cowboy himself have stated the UFC wants this fight to co-headline a pay-per-view, but that Conor McGregor has no interest in playing second-fiddle to anybody.

“Conor won’t fight unless it’s a main event,” Cerrone said in a recent interview with ESPN. “I don’t know if it’s an ego thing or a status thing for him. I don’t give a s—. I’ll fight anyone, anywhere, and I stand by that all the time. I guess he’s a prima donna and only takes main event spots, I don’t know.”

“We were all waiting on Conor for April, and he said he wasn’t ready,” Cerrone added later. “I don’t know how in one breath you can say, ‘I’ll fight anyone, anytime, anywhere,’ and the next one say, ‘I’m not ready for that one.’

“I’m more annoyed that he went radio silent after putting it out. I get it, you want to stay relevant by putting it out there, but then you can’t go radio silent. Sack up, b—-. Sign the f—ing paper.”

In the opinion of former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell, it would be foolish of the UFC to schedule a McGregor vs. Cowboy fight for a co-main event spot.

Liddell broke it down in an interview with TMZ:

“It’s a main event fight, no matter what,” Liddell said. “Come on. Conor McGregor and Cowboy? Those are two of my favorite fighters. I love watching those guys fight. Whether you like them or not personality-wise, both of those guys are studs. They fight tough.

“I don’t have to tell Conor anything,” he added. “He’ll do it. Conor will fight anybody, any place, any time. I know how it is. He’s a businessman. He’s a businessman too. He’s trying to make some money. I’m not going to get in the way of his making money, but make it happen boy, I want to see you and Cowboy go at it.”
