Cris Cyborg open to lightweight fight with PFL star Kayla Harrison
Last night, new UFC featherweight champ Amanda Nunes stated — apparently jokingly — that she is done with the featherweight division. Nunes followed this announcement by suggesting that Cris Cyborg, the woman she knocked out to win the UFC featherweight belt, fight lightweight prospect Kayla Harrison.
“Sorry Cristiane by I’m done with with 145,” Nunes wrote to Cris Cyborg. “My goal was to be a double champ. But, now I can help you build the division. I got someone for you. [Kayla Harrison] is a true 145er.”
Kayla Harrison is currently under contract with the Professional Fighters League (PFL), where she is expected to compete for a shot at $1M against several other female lightweights in the PFL’s second season.
She’s previously stated that she hopes to fight Cris Cyborg in the future.
“I still think it would be awesome to fight her,” Kayla Harrison told ESPN of Cyborg shortly after she lost to Nunes. “One loss in 10 years doesn’t make her a dud. She’s still a complete wrecking machine. That was the greatest women’s fight of all time.”
From the sounds of it, Cris Cyborg is up for this fight. She doesn’t even expect the lightweight Harrison to drop down to the featherweight division. She says that if Harrison wins the upcoming season of PFL, she’ll fight her at lightweight.
“If [Kayla Harrison] wins the PFL tournament at 155 lbs she doesn’t have to come down to featherweight. I have no problem going up in weight to compete.”
Do you think we’ll see Kayla Harrison and Cris Cyborg fight in the future?
