Cub Swanson refutes news of UFC 233 fight with Jose Aldo, suggests alternate date

By Tom Taylor - December 3, 2018

On Sunday night, reports surfaces that a rematch between former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo and long-time contender Cub Swanson was in the works for UFC 233 in Anaheim, California this January.

Unfortunately, it sounds as though reports of a fight between these two fan favorite featherweights were premature.

Speaking on Twitter on Monday morning, Cub Swanson explained that, while he loves the idea of a rematch with Jose Aldo, he will not be able to partake in the fight at UFC 233. He would, however, love to take the fight in February when the UFC makes its debut on ESPN.

“I love this fight but unfortunately somebody spoke too soon,” Cub Swanson wrote in his Tweet. “I am not fighting on 233 but I am willing to do it February 17th on ESPN 1.”

Cub Swanson and Jose Aldo first fought in the WEC cage all the way back in 2009. On that night, Aldo put Swanson away with a knee in just 8 seconds.

Not long thereafter, Aldo became the WEC featherweight champ, and eventually, the most dominant featherweight champion in UFC history. Cub Swanson chased a rematch with the Brazilian throughout both of his title reigns.

At present, Cub Swanson is riding a three-fight skid, having recently been defeated by Brian Ortega by submission, Frankie Edgar by decision, and Renato Moicano by submission. This skid was preceded by four-straight wins over Hacran Dias, Tatsuya Kawajiri, Doo Ho Choi and Artem Lobov. He’s 25-10 overall.

Jose Aldo, on the other hand, recently rebounded from a pair of TKO defeats to reigning featherweight champion Max Holloway with a first-round, body shot KO of the ever dangerous Jeremy Stephens. He’s 27-4 overall.
