Dana White gives grim update on Daniel Cormier vs. Brock Lesnar fight
Over the last few weeks, there has been ample reason to believe we might soon see Daniel Cormier defend the UFC heavyweight strap against former champ and long-time WWE star Brock Lesnar. First, it was reported that the matchup could occur at UFC 241 this summer. Then, Lesnar surrendered his WWE title at WrestleMania 35, seemingly clearing a major hurdle blocking his move to the UFC.
Speaking at the UFC’s Seasonal Press Conference on Friday afternoon, however, UFC President Dana White gave a grim update on this potential Daniel Cormier vs. Brock Lesnar fight.
“That fight isn’t even in the works,” he said. “That fight might not even happen first.”
This comment from White generated a chorus of boos from the crowd in attendance.
“That’s what Cormier said too,” White joked in response to the boos.
White added that he hasn’t even spoken to Brock Lesnar recently, and reiterated that he expects Lesnar to reach out to him when he feels like fighting.
“We haven’t even talked to Brock,” he said. “Nothing happened. That’s what we wanted to do, but Brock and I haven’t even talked. When Brock Lesnar is ready, he’ll call me.”
With Brock Lesnar off the table, Dana White discussed the remaining options for Daniel Cormier. The UFC boss claimed a rematch with former champion Stipe Miocic is a possibility.
“I don’t know if he’ll fight again, but we don’t have a date for him right now,” he said. “The first fight might be Stipe [against Cormier].”
“We’ve got to wait for Cormier. Cormier went back in the gym about two weeks ago and did a light workout. He’s still not healthy. As soon as he’s healthy to fight, we can make a decision on when we do him, and if it’s Stipe [he’ll fight].”
Who do you want to see Daniel Cormier fight next if Brock Lesnar is unavailable?
