Dana White gives update on the state of the UFC flyweight division heading into 2019

The future of the UFC flyweight division is still shrouded in mystery.

One the one hand, the promotion recently booked arguably the biggest fight in the division’s history, as reigning champion Henry Cejudo is set to defend his title against slimmed-down UFC bantamweight champ TJ Dillashaw at UFC on ESPN+1 on January 19. On the other hand, there’s been a prevalence of rumors suggesting the UFC will soon disband the division, which have been spurred on by the promotion’s choice to part ways with fighters like Demetrious Johnson, Jose Torres, Jared Brooks, Roberto Sanchez, Ulka Sasaki, and Justin Scoggins.

In a recent interview with Aaron Bronsteter of TSN, UFC President Dana White gave his latest update on this struggling division. Just like his other recent comments on the division, this one didn’t exactly provide a ton of clarity.

“Listen, I don’t know,” White said. “Obviously, if you look, we’re going into China right now with the UFC Performance Institute, we’re going into Mexico building Performance Institutes, and we’re going to find a lot of smaller people — men and women. So, we’ll see how this thing plays out.”

Interestingly, UFC President did seem to suggest that the UFC flyweight division’s chances of survival would spike if the promotion is able to find a marketable and talented fighter to helm the weight class.

“We’re making some moves right now that make sense for us, and if somebody pops up that becomes a huge star and a super talented fighter, we’ll see what happens,” he said.

Do you think Dana White and the UFC will keep the flyweight division around?
