Dana White interested in Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier 3 at heavyweight
Count UFC president Dana White among the parties interested in a third fight between rivals Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier.
Speaking to Brett Okamoto of ESPN, White said he’s interested in a trilogy bout between Jones and Cormier, and he wants to see the trilogy fight take place at heavyweight.
“Cormier has this fight coming up against Stipe Miocic (at UFC 241). If he gets past Stipe he probably has two fights left in his career. I would expect one of those would probably be Jon Jones, and hopefully at heavyweight,” White said.
Although Dana White is hopeful the trilogy fight between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier would take place at heavyweight, he admits both fights prefer for the third fight to take place at light heavyweight.
“I think Jon said, ‘I don’t want to move up to heavyweight to fight him, I’ll fight him at 205.’ And Cormier said, ‘I don’t want to beat him at heavyweight I want to beat him at 205.’ Try to get those two to agree on anything (laughs), well they do agree they want to fight at 205. But I want to see it at heavyweight,” White said.
Jon Jones takes on Thiago Santos in the main event of UFC 239 on July 6 in Las Vegas, while Cormier fights Miocic in a rematch at UFC 241 in August in Anaheim. Jones and Cormier previously met back at UFC 182 and UFC 214, with Jones winning both fights (the second win was later overturned to a No Contest due to a failed drug test.) Should both men emerge victorious in their next respective bouts, the obvious next fight for each man would be a trilogy fight, especially with Brock Lesnar having retired. Now it’s up to both parties to decide if they want the trilogy fight, but White is confident the fans want to see it.
“Cormier is an all-time great,” White said. “The only guy to ever beat him is Jon Jones, and he beat him twice. Does the third fight have to happen? No, it doesn’t have to happen. But a lot of fans want to see it happen.”
